  • Removing text from a stroke ready for vinyl cut – Help?

    Evening all at uksignboard

Im having issues trying to layer fonts for a sticker/decal

what im after is a different colour border around a different colour letter. ie layering the true text over a background the shape of the original letter.

What i am able to do in illustrator is so far

Create text – create outlines – create stroke (3pts) – Object and expand . thats given me lots of anchor points

Thats as far as i got

What i try to do is send it to summacut but i have lots of cut lines and i cant seem to select the inner true text inorder to cut that seperate to the outer stroke ,I can pull seperate individual lines and shapes out to leave the border but it would take a lifetime to do . i hope that makes sense

    TIA

Not had the need to use illustrator for a long time & never that familiar with it when I did use it a bit, is there not an outline tool in illustrator at all ?

    nearly there now

once ive sent it to cut im left with a text with an outline

i cant seem to select the whole internal lines ie original text away from stroke so i can cut them both seperatley and in proportion with each other to layer afterwords

I recommend you look closely at what the Appearance panel and Graphics Styles panel can do. All effects and text are editable until you’re ready to cut (or print), then you just expand the effects (Object-Expand menu) to separate the effects.

Your favorite effects can be saved to the Graphics Styles panel to be reused again and again, as well as being able to change all the settings later in the Appearance panel. Illustrator comes with many Graphics Styles libraries for you to try out and change as a good starting point.

Your other option would be to copy the text, go to (Type – Create Outlines), then go to (Object – Path – Offset Path) and change the colour of the outline. The only problem with this is that you can’t change the outline size once set, the type becomes uneditable and finally it is not as straightforward to copy the same size if you go work on the file later.
Copying the text at least guarantees you have the original if you need to make changes to fonts, etc.
