  • Removing scratches from clear acrylic

Posted by Martin Manley on January 4, 2017 at 8:31 am

Got a job yesterday for a large acrylic plaque and thought "good, I’ve got a a big 10mm thick offcut in the rack that’s been hanging around for a year or more!" Of course, when I pulled it out it’s got two scratches right through the cover film! They’re not that deep but don’t fancy attacking them with sander and polishing mop – anyone have any ideas on removing these an easier way?

    Cheers

I use novus (think that’sthe name) scratch removal which comes in different grades for different scratch depths, basically a more aggressive cutting action for deeper scratches but its not as cheap as Brasso 😆 😆 😆

Depends on the depth and coverage.

    T-cut for the fine ones.

2000 to 3000 grit wet and dry sandpaper for the deeper ones. Done wet then t-cut to buff out.

    Or

Flame polish. A quick waft over gets rid of many like magic if you are careful.

No matter what you do, it might still be visible in certain lights.

Thanks all, going with wet and dry option for the moment – seems to be working ok. Never did get round to buying a flame polisher…
