• Removing LEDs

Posted by Stephen Ingham on 22 June 2010 at 21:03

Hi all, can anyone give me some help please?

I have been asked to remove some built up letters that have LEDs inside them, for us to re-fit once some work has been carried out on the face of the shop.

My question really is, is there anything i need to know when removing the wiring, from what i have been told they are usually low voltage, is this true?

Also, once the letters have been removed the shop front is going to be tiled, then the letters will be re-fitted, i am a little concerned about the tiles being fragile whilst re drilling, any tips??

Any help or advice is much appreciated

    cheers

Power will 99% sure be 12v supplied from a 240 transformer (usually internal). Will probably be push connectors – pull them off.

    Re-fitting & drilling tiles:

having done a few of these…

A lot of issues comes from a poor installation of the tiles – voids behind the tiles and they basically shatter when you break through.

Depending on the tile type (limestone, ceramic, glass, granite) the choice of drill will be important.

Ceramics & glass often better with a tungsten taper bit. Really fragile – but do a great job of grinding through. Limestone – gentle hammer drill / tungsten taper. Granite – can usually beast your way through with a full on hammer drill if they are thick – gentle, gentle if they are nasty thin ‘domestic’ tiles. Recommend pilot holes on the granite of maybe 4mm and clearing out the 6/7mm for the rawl plugs….done that on glass before too.

Hi David thanks for the answers.

How do i find out what material the tiles are made of?

What i may do is ask the customer to ask the tiler to save one or two so we can test drill a few holes…

    cheers

Best to get a sample, eg. some of the trimmed tiles from the install. make sure they have quite a few spares as it is highly likely that a few will be lost (with cracks that can’t be hidden) no matter how careful you are.

Big fan of EVO Serious Stuff, not sure about glueing foamex to tiles though. The glue will certainly do it…just seems an odd choice of material.
NEEDS to be taped in place as it takes 1 hr (hot day) and 4 hours (cold day) to go off to a sufficient state that they won’t migrate down the wall! Alternative is a few small squares of foam d/s tape to grab in strategic places as the glue does its work.

And lastly – if you can accept NO liability for replacing broken tiles. Write in to the contract / quote that whilst every effort will be made to minimise the risk of damage some breakages may be unavoidable due to the potential of voids behind the tiles and the material composition.
    Some tiles are ££££
