  • Removing emblems?

Posted by Jill Marie Welsh on 27 June 2009 at 11:38

I have to letter a truck cap this morning.
On the back glass, which is tinted black, is a domed emblem decal.
I have been trying to get it off using a razor blade at the edges and then dental floss, but it is not cooperating.
I am reluctant to get out the hair dryer to heat this for fear of cracking the glass.
It is only a small emblem, about 1½" x 4", but it is in the way.
It’s still chilly out, maybe the morning sun (if it ever comes out) will soften it up.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Love….Jill

I don’t know what to say for best Jilly, but I’d use heat.

Applied very slowly, and over the whole area of the glass to minimise local expansion problems.

I can’t guarantee the method but, if all else had failed, that’s what I’d do.

That’s what I ended up doing.
I used a hair dryer and I was real careful.
I loosened the edges enough that I could grasp it with my thumb and fingers then I peeled it off in sections.
    😉

    HI Jill,

for future reference this may help.

if you know someone who does a fair bit of fishing, ask them if they use ‘braided lines’ and if they do, see if you can pinch a few feet,

i use a 40lb braking strain braid on one of my reels and decided to try it when removing the badges on my toyota mpv, it works a treat, virtually unbreakable (if you keep it away from sharp edges when inder tension) and it glides through the felt pad stuff in a see-saw motion with ease. that was my experience anyways.

also, if you get some, wrap the ends around something solid for quite a few turns, if you try wrapping it round your fingers it’ll make them a bid messy 🙂

Tried the fishing line trick on the GoldWing badges on the back of my bike.

Took the lacquer off and ended up getting it re-sprayed. 🙁

hmmm, i would guess it was a monofilament line (plasticy), braid is soft like string so shouldn’t do that, I wouldn’t have thought anyways!
