registraion line comes out different sizes?
Posted by David Hammond on 4 September 2012 at 20:46I have a 3 colour logo, created in illustrator, and sent cut using cutting master.
I had this problem before but used CM to scale the file up, this time I enlarged the logo in illustrator and then cut.
I applied the bottom layer 3 squares, then when I come to align the 2nd layers registration mark its at least 5mm shorter? Making it impossible to align it perfectly.
I cut from the same file, the same path as the registration line.
I’m mythed as to why it does it?

roughly how big.
did you cut one across the plotter and the others down it. -
Logo is 1200 wide, about 450 tall. The blue squares cut across 1230 vinyl, the overlay down 630 vinyl.
Registration line is 1200x10mm, in CM the sizes were the same.
Could that be the cause? Wouldn’t think it would make much difference.

David is it possible there is a stroke around the registration line that you are not taking into account, and you have your measurements in illustrator set up to include stroke in the overall measurement? I’ve done that before…

Morning Simon,
There shouldn’t be, I just draw a box with the rectangle tool to make the registration line. Using the same box for each layer of vinyl.
Regardless of which way its cut there shouldn’t be a 5mm difference in length. Its got to be a cm setting or something on the plotter. The length/width of each layer is always 1200 in cm. 😕
When I am infront of the computer I will upload a pdf of the logo.
Cheers

Are both vinyls the same spec, I usually have issues like this if using say M4 over M7 for example.

most plotters will cut accurately across the width but have to be calibrated down the roll and can be 5mm out over 1200mm length cut.
as warren says overall thickness of material can also make some difference.
when doing shadows for large length words we make sure all is cut in the same direction. on the same class of material.
you can adjust it on the plotter feed calibration but don’t really know any body that does. -
It’s happened regardless of material, and using the same one.
It must be the feed calibration, I will do some experimenting.

draw a 1000mm by 25mm box send and cut in the feed direction the measure it. use a off cut.
have you ever measured a 1000mm print out of interest bet that not quite right either.
enjoy

Sorted it.
I did as you said Chris and cut a strip 1000x25mm and measured it. it was about 5mm different.
In the condition menu, you can adjust the X & Y cut distance, so increased the X just under 2% and got it within a mm.
