  • reflective highway signs, advice please.

    Hi all,

i’ve got the job of fitting some aluminium signs on a housing estate, i was going to simply use green reflective with relief text cut out to reveal white background.

is this ok (bearing in mind white will naturally look light in headlights) or do i need to use white reflective too? on highway signs i’m sure they use regular lettering and a reflective background, am i right or wrong?

    thanks,
    Hugh

Good luck Hugh…I was asked to do some ‘highway’ stuff and after asking on here and looking at the ‘regs’ decided it was too much of a minefield so ran away…. :lol1:

lol, it’s only on a housing estate giving directions so not exactly highway, just needs to be seen from the residential roads at night.

I have just done some brown tourist signs and looked at the regs.
As roger has said it seems there are strict controls and signs at the side of the road are controlled by the council and Highways dept which have to authorise them.
Mine were luckily on private land and therefore not covered by the regs.
I went and studied quite a few roadside signs and despite the controls there seems to be quite a mish mash out there.
Some are brown (or green) over as you say a white reflective background. while some are just white text on a coloured background. So I think it comes down to if its on the side of an official highway the local council & highways dept needs to be contacted for both permission and specs while if it is all on private land then you can do what you like and just make it look good.

    thanks Stuart,

luckily the signs are all going onto buildings owned by the HA that own the estate, only one is going on a lamp post but, again, that’s on their private car park.

i’m more concerned about which will work look better from a distance, white and green reflective (text and background respectively) or white vinyl on green reflective?

as you say, there’s a right mish mash of signs out there, hard to tell what is what!

If they are on private property you could probably get by with using a dark green substrate with white reflective lettering.
I think cutting the whole thing out of green reflective and putting it onto a white substrate is going to be hard to read at night and also a PITA to apply.
At least if I tried it!
    Love….Jill
    PS
I have to go by a place for whom I did a sign like this last winter, never photographed it yet. Dark green Alumalite/white reflective/painted black outline. Maybe I will remember to snap a pic. It’s a highway sign for a university-owned museum.

    cheers Jill,

the white lettering on green is their preference, just need to figure which is the best way to do it!

    cheers,

    cheers John,

    i’m sorted now.

been advised to use either reflectives layered up or, the modern way, transparent films onto a white reflective background.
