    Hi Derek,
Sadly the material I used on my van, a ‘cast’ reflective would you believe (I’m told) has been discontinued by the manufacturer – according to allprint who sold it, sad for me as I’ve built a branded product on the back of it and could only afford to buy enough to go another year max! I thank the late great John Childs for putting me onto it about 6 years ago! I digitially printed on to the reflective, the idea being that when illuminated the design showed in full colour, the rest of the time it was kind of holographic on my black van, haven’t seen it done before or since and it broke my heart to peel it all off!

I’ve not tried the oracle but I would hope it’s better than the other black reflectives I’ve trialled in the past, most are rubbish and reflect a yellowy / dirty whitish gold from memory.

3M schotchlite black is ok but again, it’s that old fashioned metalised / foil back looking stuff, I don’t think it was as good as what I use but I will soon have to make a decision on which film to move over to..

I use a fair bit of Oracal Reflective. From all that i have tried over the years, its the best reflective i know of.

    • * Cuts and weeds great.

      * has about 14-18 colours in the range, more than any other brand i know of.

      * will strip clean when heat up and peeled like regular vinyl, but slightly more care needed. (try doing that with other reflectives and it is a nightmare)

      * comes with EU type ghost markings on the face to prove its quality. which i personally think all vinyls should.

      * can be printed directly onto with either Latex, Solvent or UV printers. print quality is great.

      * can be cut in a regular cutter.

      * Even the conspicuity version can too

    Rob,
only the 5600 range is officially printable and ghost marked, the 5400 range isn’t.

Paperlinx have now discontinued many of the colours and told me they won’t be getting them in again. pretty much only doing the stock colours now (white, yellow, orange, red, green, blue) and black I think. This means I now have to order 25m logs from other sources (a lot of expense and left-over materials) in order to fulfill repeat orders.

while it does come off better than any other reflective I use, the oracle black is not a patch on the discontinued black I’m currently retailing! Has lft me a bit high and dry really, two of my most popular lines .. one never again available, the other I have to buy 2yrs worth in one go!

Yes, one is purposely for printing but I am sure we print on both without any issues Hugh.

My point on the Certified media emblem on the face is something I think strongly about and should be on every vinyl, not just reflective. there is too much crap on the market being sold to us by suppliers, too much "pitching and switching" of media going on. and i am not just talking at cowboy level, I am even talking amongst the biggest sign and fleet media companies in the UK.

The colours are not discontinued Hugh, it is that Paperlinx will only "stock" the most popular colours, which is understandable when you consider the cost of reflective films and shelf life the media.
Paperlinx do still offer the full list of colours, it is just that you have a few days waiting time on certain colours, rather than next day delivery, and a minimum order.
Look at any other reflective vinyl on the market and i think you will be hard pushed to find more colours than bog standard Black, White, yellow, red, green and blue.

that aside, i do feel your frustration on this mate. nothing worse…
may sound silly, but if your printing directly to it. (am i picking you up wrong here?) if printing direct. print the black too and the whole thing will reflect because the ink is transparent?

    Hi Rob,
I cut the vinyl but have had it printed onto in the past, when the dragon was done we printed black onto the black to give shadow etc, it took a little bit of thought!
Paperlinx sales told me they were discontinued full stop (as in they’re not supplying them), never even offered to get them in, where-as Antalis will.

I agree about the markings on vinyls though, would at least show customers we’re using a good spec brand name vinyl rather than cheap 50p a metre tat.
