Recommendations for best App tape
Posted by JonPinder on 10 June 2010 at 20:23Hi Everyone,
Can anyone recommend me a different app tape, I am currently using some called Unitac from Victory Design. Using it yesterday it applied to the graphic OK, but I don’t know if it was the weather as it was heavy rain here but it was as if the moisture in the air had got to the app tape as it crinkled like mad when I was working in the unit. Needless to say this has made fitting the graphics to the van today a blumming pain.
Is using clear app tape any better? Does it crease less?
Is Unitac cheap rubbish and can you recommend something else
or is it just my technique I need to scratch up on.
Thanks in advance for any replies
Jon.

Conform or perfectear tape would be my personal choice.
Clear appy tape is fine as long as its for ‘overlaying’.
Other wise is far to ‘stiff’ and releases the vinyl far too easily.
Do you know there is different types of tack with appy tape?
Low tack, medium tack and hight tack.
Worth looking into as it makes the application so much easier and quicker.
As it’s just thrown away not alot of time is spent looking for the right tape just whats cheapest, but in the long run its as important as the vinyl being fitted.

Thanks for your reply, I had read that there are different types of app tape tack wise. But when do you use low tack – high tack.

Hi Again!
High tack…Small lettering
Low tack for basic big stuff that just sort of needs holding together while fitting.
Medium tack…safe bet and should cover all aspects!
Hope this helps.

I use high tack for 99% of jobs and low tack for things like 4′ high letters on hoardings.
The R-tape (conform) ref. 4075 from William Smith is one of the very best paper tapes I’ve tried.
It’s comparable with ‘Perfect Tear’.
Many companies have tried to flog me sub-standard tat for £10 cheaper a log…they are without fail – all rubbish. Then again – sometimes the ‘slightly dearer’ stuff isn’t all that great either.
Personally I don’t like clear tape as you can’t tear it and i never find it to be as sticky as paper.

perfect tear usually high tech, clear r-tape the only thing that makes me not like that is the static it creates. I have also found weather conditions affect both paper and clear I can app tape and it’s perfectly flat two mins later if it is humid it wrinkles and I have had this with both 🙄
as long as it goes on the graphic flat it doesn’t really matter, but it is annoying.Lynn

i use Oracals application tapes, cant see by them and i have tried lots.
i have heard allot of GOOD reports about R-Tape, conform etc but wasn’t for me. i found that between letters, where the tape wasn’t in contact with the vinyl. the tape puffed up in cold weather creating problems when i was applying. other times it took me longer to remove the tape than it did apply the vinyl due to shearing and coming off in bits. i did try a few rolls of the stuff so wasnt a rogue roll, but admittedly this was all happening during the winter. so may have been a result of a bad batch or all down to the cold. so i need to sit on the fence with that one, and i say that because so many recommend, but not for me I’m afraid. -
R Tape for me too, it’s all I’ve ever used except for that one roll of clear tape. That was when I did everything wet, it’s a real no-no with clear tape.
I can screw lettering up easily enough on my own without help from the app tape.

HOWEVER…………. the last roll I bought is driving me bonkers and I don’t know what it is (maybe a bad one as Rob said) but it takes me forever to get the backing paper off as all the cornets and small dots etc don’t release off the backing paper and if not very slow and careful will rip the letters.
but this is the first time this has happened so I hope it’s just a bad roll and I need to call them to let them know.
cheers
Warren
