  • Really, really bad ink scatter

Now it might just be a coincidence or the weather or something but we’ve just changed banner media as Soyang were out of stock of out usual stuff. Ran off a load of large black banners and the scatter is terrible (25+m). Streaking black up to 2" into the white and the yellow is casting all over it as well….and then the ink flow is dropping out on yellow & black a bit despite running it slow & with print ‘n’ wipe being on for added peace of mind.

Changed damper on the dodgy black yesterday – and the manifold as the spigot snapped during the change and test pattern is perfect so flow not an issue.

Static build up on the new media? NEVER had it this bad on anything I’ve put through the machine before.

Got 8 rolls of it left…

    Thoughts?

    Hi David

we had this years ago so doing this from memory…

Static can cause this as you have mentioned, but something else you shouldn’t rule out.
get a torch or use the LED light on your phone and shine it in at the heads and look "very close". Even on very clean kept machines, you can sometime get a hair/fibre or strand of whatever hanging from the head. if you see anything suspect, even very small. pull it off or do whatever to get rid of it and then get your cleaning swab and clean around your print head. do this more thorough than usual. sometimes when we clean the head we just move the strand and after a few hours it falls back down causing the overspray again.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely not fluff or a hair. I even set it to ‘print and wipe’ after every 10 passes. Made no difference. Static build up and gets worse the more material come off but only seems of be streaks of black or yellow. Machine earthed and nothing changed except the media…had to give up running it on this and put it through on the other machine (JV3) which takes longer and ties it up instead of printing vinyl. Not done a long banner yet so have to see how it goes.

Ran off a 3m run as photo banner and less pronounced scatter. It did start about half way but then I went round touching the media and grounding it to the heating rad as it printed. Scatter reduced. Thinking I may have to rig up a bit of wire!
