  • Re-cycling sign wastage – who does it?

Following on from Paul’s post ref. eco-freindly signage, I wondered if anyone knows if we can recycle the waste backing paper off vinyls, application tape etc?

And what about scrap vinyl? Or scrap foamboard?

I am recycling backing paper, but not sure if I should, because of the coating on it. Does anyone know?

    More to the point, does anyone care? (?) (?) (?) (?) (?) (?) (?) (?)

i roll up and re-use alot of the backing paper, some gets used for signs and some for simply laying a clean surface under the plotter to keep long spools of vinyl clean as they go thru,

otherise i’ve found no use for it and incinerate it, our bins only get empties fortnightly, i got told off for putting it in the recycle bin cos its shiny backed ! so it gets burned,

re the vinyl, i throw all offcuts into a big box and re-use what i can for small jobs or fixing mistakes etc ! every couple of weeks i’ll go thru it all, keep what i think worth keeping, and the rest goes to my daughters school, i’m almost a saint there with my “sticky back plastic” as they call it !, the weeded vinyl usully gets put in the bin, dont burn it cos of the fumes and smoke !

if there’s a way of recycling waste vinyl i’d be glad to send it off if i had too, easy to fill my bin in a week, even with keep jumping on it !

We do the same as Hugh

Send small ofcuts of vinyl to local schools and play groups, this is also a very good way of introducing your business to them, we have had business from the schools we have donated to.

All the cardboard is collected for recycling including tubes although these we also send to schools for projects.

Most off-cuts of forex eventually get used or you could invent a use for them like making clocks, awards etc

The backing paper is an issue though nd we have asked if the stuff can be recycled but I don’t think it can

If you send a lot of things in the post it could be shredded and used as packing but it just gets trown away further down the line.

So I don’t know what the answer is

One way to save on space is to take an old box from a roll of vinyl and any backing paper you have roll it up and put it in the box. It will expand once in the box to make room for your next deposit. It’s not really recycling, but it takes up less room in your trashcan.

I do the same as Hugh with some of my backing paper and use it to keep the spooled cut vinyl clean, other than sending my vinyl offcuts to my daughters school there isnt much you can recycle.
