  • Re-cycling of sign waste?

Posted by Craig Bond on 23 May 2007 at 22:25

As we all know re-cycling is an important issue these days. In peoples experiences what can and can’t we re-cycle as sign makers?

The wax backing paper on vinyl? Between us all we must have 1000’s of tons of this. In my Council District it is a grey area. They just can’t seem to decide if I can re-cycle this or not.

The snippets of Foamex we get?

The ‘weeded’ vinyl that goes into the bin?

    The used application tape?

    Any thoughts?

hmm not sure of the recycling part but we do find ways to use those pieces in other manners so thats kind of recycling/reuse. The wax liners we use to slip/sheet large runs of POP displays, between banners when we roll them up to ship, packing materials etc. The foam pieces and sintra we give to the local school for their art class, they are always thankful of it and find uses for it. Theres also a local autobody shop that is always willing to take our liner paper from us because he uses it as a spray shield to protect body panels from over spray instead of buying rolls of paper to do so. Which works out well because whenever we need bodywork done on some of the trucks we do or new rivets he is always there for us.

So…there are definately uses for it to be reused…but as far as making it go away… not really sure. I know for the vinyl the recycling plant uses an acidlike dip for it to dissolve it, but it then has to be in a room with air purifiers because of the toxins it gives off.

the only items that we can re-cycle are metals, brass, ali, stainless (which we weigh in every now and then) and Acrylic which can be recycled and there are some companies that will collect it for free if there is enough.

The rest is just scrap and not worth re-cycling, it costs more to process it than it does to tip it. We have a box of scrap vinyls/offcuts that we give away to primary schools and also the secondary schools like A4 pieces of foamex, pvc etc for their ‘design technology’ classes when we are quiet we cut a load of offcuts up and send them round to the local schools.

The backing paper cannot be re-cycled like normal paper because it is silicon coated and this cannot be removed easily.

    Same here.

Checked with our local company and they tested the samples I sent and told me the same.

Vinyl has glue on it so it’s not suitable for their process and the paper has Silicon on so the same.

I presume it is possible as Oracal are German and they are very strict about recycling there so I would presume that Oracal had to produce or recommend a recycling process for their product.

Sorry to drag this back on topic, but we have had our backing and used app tape sent for testing and been told it’s fine for recycling. I think they mix it in with other stuff so it goes in in smaller quantities.

Also found a company to recycle used versacamm carts, you can do a search and find the topic on here.
