    Hi Guys,

At the minute I have a gerber edge and using GSP Omega Composer and everything has to be in a vector file (ESP & Ai is mainly what i’ve been using). Im looking to get a Digital Printer soon and was wondering if it was the same that they need to be vector files? The reason I ask is that a competitior took a photo on a camera and made a graphic out of it. Do logos need to be converted from Jpeg into another file?

Sorry if the answer is so simple and seems like a stupid question. 😳

    Thanks in advance

    Paul

    Paul,

I’m pretty sure most RIP programs would support a large array of file formats and they don’t have to be vectory unless you want to print and cut. If you are just printing you can print PDF’s, EPS, JPEG’s, TIFF’s, PostScript etc. Well I can in VersaWorks.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I am looking to cut to. I have the templates of what i’m cutting. Say I took a Jpeg and put it over the top of the template. Would the cutter not just cut the template and the Jpeg would still be left in the shape of the template?

    Thanks

If you want to cut a jpeg you need to import it into illustrator or corel etc and add the cut line and export the file as an EPS. So its a vector file with an embedded raster image.

You then print and cut it. Depending on the setup you buy its done in one go or you take your print and load it into a cutter and it will cut it for you.

Thanks for the reply again. I’m not looking to cut the jpeg exact. Basically i’ve got templates of some motorcycles and may be looking to put a picture over the top of them then get it to cut the motorcycle shapes ready to apply. Is this possible or am I totally lost here. Im looking at the Roland Versacamm setup at the minute.

The simple answer is yes. Your bitmaps will print and your vectors will cut.

So, you could have a photo on the page with a vectored shape around it. You would print the photo and then cut the vector part. You can of course also print vectors if you want.

Thanks for the help guys. I understand a bit more now. I’m sure that the Roland Versacamm is going to do what i want now. Really big help to me rather than buying it unsure. Hopefully one day I may be able to help you guys as a thank you.

    Thanks Again.

Paul, don’t think you have done your homework very well, the edge should print full colour graphics and you should only need a vector outline to actually contour cut the graphics.
Depending on the sort of work you do will really determine what printer would best suit you and the edge can do some jobs that a solvent or eco solvent printer can not.

Good point Martin, I missed the reference to the edge. You can print bitmaps on the edge. Weird.
