  • Question about Sign Business

Posted by Harry Cleary on 22 September 2010 at 13:04

Just thinking in type here and wondered what your views are on this.
In the same way as people offer vectoring services, does anybody think that there would be a viable business in supplying design and cut ready files to busy sign businesses? Would businesses have a use for experienced sign designers prepared to work in this way? Would being ‘remote’ be too much of a disadvantage?

that sounds like a great idea Harry, some people are really good at promoting their company and get lots of work so would probably be better off selling than having to spend hours at the pc, then like me a 2 man band, I’m quite sharp on the pc but often can’t get back to it until a jobs finished.

I’d sit here all day and churn out designs and ready to cut images for other people and thoroughly enjoy it.

At the moment I’m in a position to take on work pc side as fitting is going slow as I’m only a start up, so it would make sense for me to be getting some hourly rates in the bank, while the other more experienced and established sign writers stick it on the vehicles.

There would be times I would out-source layouts if it was readily available…… 😀

Design spec would have to be on the ball for the designer to work within though……

yeh, get someone who is really good on design, production and fittingside of things to do all the work and then just pay me a good profit margin while I spend it doing up my house and going on holidays…..

Is that what you mean Harry??? No worries doing that remotely!!!

    cool.

There are occasions when design only would be handy. Dont you do alot of production Harry?

I would certainly think it a useful service,
but would be even more interested in print and/or print and cut designs.

I’m a brushie at heart Steve and to be honest have never really got on with vinyl, it just doesn’t suit me. But I do love it’s capabilities.
I have been exploring the possibility of just doing design work aimed specifically at other signmakers as the design world is over subscribed. I hear and see other signmakers talking about the problems & pitfalls of taking on permanent people and I thought a service like this would suit some of them.

Harry I think the optimum is some one who designs signs, who knows how it works in the sign making world, we do work with a lot of designers, some send us work we don’t have to do anything to because they understand the concept of printed vinyl, and cut vinyl, and some we get that we have to do stuff to, to, to make it printable or cuttable.

That’s what I wonder about about Lynn, how much variance is there in the wys people get work prepared. More research methinks especially on the print end of things?
