PVC Banner across a High Street.
Posted by John Lloyd on 22 March 2010 at 14:39We’ve been asked to quote to print a banner that is going across a High Street. It’s going to be up a couple of weeks. I’m still waiting to speak to the person responsible for hanging the sign, we normally use a Xerox banner material and they have recommended one of their heavy vinyls for this job. The size is 20foot by 2.5foot.
Is there anything special I need to worry about when I hem and eyelet it? OR any other problems for banners across a High Street?
Thanks.

I would consider using mesh banner as this will allow the wind to pass through. you may be better getting it made up by someone who can weld the hem for you.

Hi John
just a point of housekeeping – A quick intro in the say hello section might get you better responses – touchy lot on here :lol1:

It might be a good idea to approach the municipality where this banner will be hung to see what is permitted.
Here we have strict zoning rules for street banners.
There must be a wire cable strung across the street top and bottom, grommets every so many feet, and the banner attached to the cables with clips.
I try to avoid making these at all.

You will need to use a blockout banner material to ensure the image doesn’t show through to the other side and unless there are suitable wire rope fixings you will need to supply these. There are companies that supply (and therefore take responsibility for) road spanning blank banners like this one: http://www.boldscanshop.com/pvc-banners … nners.html and will also print for you if required.
Fitting can also be a nightmare as the road often has to be closed. I know that the one that goes up across our local busy high street is fitted on a Sunday by the Fire Brigade but don’t know how they manage to organise that!

Hi John
As Colin rightly pointed out, there are many instances where the road would be needed to closed to the public. This is a very long winded procedure and a lot of form filling/method statements etc..
Least of all an access license and insurance will be needed!
Don’t just turn up with the banner and a set of ladders…you WILL regret it!!

What sort of info have you been given by the customer, as has been said you can’t just stick a banner up across any public access. Banners come under LOLER and it can be a minefield of regulations and forms.
Speak to Steve at Boldscan and he will give you most of the info you need. -
Boldscan have done some for me as well and was top notch work and looked the part to go across the high street, I didn’t fit it and was arranged by the customer through the council (and Serco) as they do a few so it was supply only.
So speak to Bold scan as theirs work as it went up and stayed up 😉

I am aware of regulations regarding fitting the banner and at the moment the customer says they will take responsibility for fitting the banner across the High Street.
I am more interested in the material to use and ensuring the eyelets or fixing points on the banner are stong enough.
Thanks for all the advice very helpful.

John, the wire doesn’t fit to an eyelet, the wire runs through a pole pocket at the top of the banner. Check the regulations because I don’t think you can just fit a wire to an eyelet at the end of the banner. As for which material to use sorry can’t help as I buy anything like that in already made up.

Martin – yes ive seen them done that way, – but its more common to run a wire across the road and then suspend the banner with loop fastenings from the wire to the banner eyelets. And tether the banner from each bottom corner or for larger banners another wire underneath right across as above.

Thanks for that John, seem to have hijacked other Johns post a bit. Fife Council are funny about fitting anything like that and tend to do it themselves so I don’t get to involved. I just know if I buy the Boldscann banners the council will accept them.
