  • Protecting decals that are printed on clear vinyl – help?

    Posted by JC1520 on 7 October 2014 at 05:07

I am printing small decals on clear vinyl using a Roland printer.

Decals are then applied to helicopters and small aircraft.

The issue we are having is when the aircraft is washed the ink tend to come of over time.

These decals are also used on the outside and the aircraft, also been used in high temperature areas (middle east)

Any suggestions on how we can protect these decals with anything before applying it to aircraft.

we are about to experiment with spraying clear coat lacquer over them.

Is there any special ink we can use. If we order decals from manufacture these are perfect and are not affected.

Chris I don’t have any experience with laminating and we don’t have one here however i can purchase one easily do you or any one have recommendations on laminators and will this help to resolve my issue.
If we buy these decals from the manufacturer of the aircraft it cost a fortune especially with the high turn over of these decals required as we have a fleet of helicopters and aircraft on the same scale of enterprise rent a car fleet but with flying machines

As Chris says just overlaminate with the same clear material that you print onto. For test purposes the easy way would be to free issue some clear to someone with a laminator and then cut after they’ve laminated.
It may help if you identified yourself more openly and also where you are, I’m sure another member on here might help

You can buy some laminate and apply by hand either wet or dry to prove the point 😀
