Producing cuttable text in different languages
Posted by Russell Pavey on January 26, 2009 at 2:30 pmI’ve been asked to do some signs in various languages one of which being Somalian. Basically customer has faxed me the script handwritten with the english translation next to it. Had planned on scanning it then tracing in Corel but this just isn’t going to work.
I need to try and find away of getting this into a cuttable eps graphic.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Russ

Isn’t Somali language characters just the same as English (i.e. a,f,h,t etc rather that ‘squiggles’)?
-
thanks Gareth – no not in this case – very much squiggles.

It is VERY complicated isn’t it? You must have Wadaad’s writing then….
-
Use this by entering the English and translating to Somali then drag over the translation, copy and paste.

Thanks guys
Thanks for the link Dave but unfortunately it only does it into english characters rather than the sqiggly Wadaad’s script.
Gareth – thanks for the link – there was a PDF on there with a keyboard layout with the script in vectors that I may be able to use. A laborious job of arranging them may ensue.

Russell,
I do a lot of Somali stuff, I use these people http://www.intlangco.com.au/
The send it in eps files if you request it, just about any format actually,
2 day turn around usually.
Excellent results.
They have done Greek, Korean, as well…..
Saves having to re vector 🙄
Thing to remember is the dialect…. Most Somali is actually Khmer, but worth clarifying tho….

i had to do some phrases in thai for a kickboxing school
you need to install the language you want from windows
then find a free font online
you can then switch to the different language on your pc
from what i can remember the thai had about 44 characters
and these all corresponded to a different key on the keyboard
they used more than just the letters so i just hit every key in sequence and printed off a list
then it was a case of matching the symbol to the key
i was given the phrases in english so had to go off an online translator – so if you have the script it will be easiervery laborious but it was something different and it turned out well

Thanks guys for the info – I’ll put this option forward to the customer.
