  • Problems adhering locators to dibond?

Posted by Ian Hatfield on 27 March 2009 at 14:09

I have just completed (nearly completed ) signage consisting of 200mm high brushed Dibond letters on locator’s. The problem is the locator’s on some of the letters keep falling off. My question is what glue do other people use and do you rought out the back of the Dibond to expose the core and glue to that?

I use ‘evostik serious stuff’ – a high bond, rubberised adhesive / sealant.

    works a treat on di-bond / alu.

Have used it on several occasions to repair letters (by others) that keep losing their locators.

Takes 4-5 hours to ‘go off’ properly. Just a big blob under the locator and a small few blobs at the sides. Never failed me yet.

If anyones making Dibond built-ups, Evo is the only thing that sticks them successfully.

I mostly buy my letters in with the locators on, otherwise I use evotec 431 with snapfix locators you definately need to rough up the composite prior to using the glue.

I use Araldite. Just scuff the surface of both the locator and the dibond.

we use super glue onto a small square of foam, then screw locator onto foam, works very well.

we use a two part 3M adhesive. score the surface clean with isoprop and apply.

you have to be careful with many adhesives just now. most heat right up while curing and cause dimples on the face of the composite board.
the dimples are about 1.5inch radious

We use PENLOC, its the strongest stuff you can get in my eyes. Its a structural adhesive. We have done loads of di-bond letters for customers now, and the letters are still stuck fast to their fixings. Sets in 5mins rock hard. Don’t even need to score the material. You wont go wrong using Penloc

I think we got ours from a place called EuroBond they have a website.

Thanks all, I went with the evostik serious stuff, and it really does do the job. The initial grab is good and you can nearly hang off the locators when its gon off. This will be our fixing of choice in the future.
