  • Problem with cutting order of a word.

    Hi guys,

Not quite sure what to call the topic name of this post but hopefully an explanation will help you understand the problem i`m having

I have a customer who`s logo was a sort of bastardised font.

I created it in sign lab 7 and it basically consists of 8 letters with various little node edits and tweaks and a shape welded in to them.

When i send it to plot, for some reason the blade starts in the middle of the word.

It plots letters 5, 6, 7 and 8 then it jumps to the beginning of the word and plots 1, 2, 3 and 4th letters then is jumps back along to the 7th letter again and puts the dot on top of the letter "i"

I`ve tried breaking the path, made no difference. i`ve also tried grouping and ungrouping the letters and welding them and grouping them together 1 at a time etc.

Anyone had any experience of this before? I really need it to cutting the letters in sequence because they are so large and if they track out even slightly i have to manually adjust the kerning etc after i`ve weeded them.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

re edit them, by copying each letter individually into a new job sheet, one letter at a time in the order you want them cut.

Ungroup the text so that each letter is an item. Select the first letter to cut, right click and select "start sequence". Then click on each letter in turn in the order which you want to cut, ending by clicking on a blank part of screen.
Select sort in the cut menu and select "database" and show sort order.
In the cut preview it will number the cut order in the order just selected.

To adjust the cut start point of each letter, convert all text to graphics.
Double click a letter, select the node where you want the start to cut and right click.
Select the arrow with the red blob at one end. This will set the cut start point.
You can change the direction of the knife by again right clicking and selecting the squiggly circle. This will make the little arrow thingy face the other way.

in the cutter options there should be a ‘sort by’ section, choose ‘nearest first’ that should do the job. Apologies if i’ve missed the point or someone else has answered… rushing about!

@ Ian: Worked a treat mate. Thanks very much for the pointer. This will save me sooo much time.

@ Peter: Thanks Peter. I was unable to find some of those features you suggested. I`m running SL 7, not sure if thats the reason. Right clicking does nothing and when i go in to the menu there is no option to "sort". Thanks anyways, you detailed reply was appreciated.

@Gavin: Thanks Gav, got it all sorted out with Ian`s suggestion.

no problem, sometimes the easiest is the best,

It happens due to the order that you edited the letters, It happens a lot when CNC’ing if doing detailed stuff this is the handiest way to ensure all happens in the right order

FYI. Gavins solution is generally the one to be used, once set it will stay set for all jobs, and will not require any rebuilding of jobs, or sequencing.

To set it up, go to Cut > Plotting defaults >
In the very centre of the window, you will see Options. Find Sort and check that option, another dialog will come up, you have a number of options.
i would recommend choosing Nearest Sort, although for some Horizontal might also work well.

Once applied it will be applied to all cut jobs thereafter.
