Problem printing through Onyx Postershop Preflight
Posted by Richard Peirce on 29 June 2006 at 10:40For some reason when I send a job though preflight that’s a PDF (this is so I have a CutContour) the gradient part of an image/file disappears or is distorted!! This has only occured since upgrading from version 6 to 6.5.
Can anyone help please?? 🙁

Depending on what it was created in, onyx’s RIP engine has trouble converting over some gradients from various software (especially complex ones like illustrators gradient map) My solution to this is to imnport it into photoshop, turn the whole thing into a high res TIFF and then send it to preflight, this should do the trick 🙂 If this causes a problem for your contour cutting and you cant go without a PDF, then just rasterize the complex Gradients at 100dpi at full size.
But the short answer is turning whatever is causing the problem to a bitmap. Check your colours afterwards as onyx may change some colours once it renders the bitmap against vectors that should be the same colour, a simple colour replacement in preflight should solve this.
Please advise if this works, i have a couple of ways of dealing with this problem.

Pauly, many thanks for the response.
The thing is that some files I have created in exactly the same way, and are virtually the same file, just with a couple of details missing to go on a slightly different product. Now, I can’t understand why but they have no problem importing the gradient!! (?) (?) It’s the same illustrator gradient background and everything!! The solution you gave is my other option I have considered, the one about changing to a rasterized image, I know that this will probably work, but its the hassle that I shouldn’t have to do this if other files have worked before…..so damn frustrating! 🙂
Checking the colours and doing a replacement in Onyx won’t work as the image doesn’t render there at all, and its only a greyscale image, although the rest of the image does appear ok. I have found that if I save the file as an eps illustrator file, this will work, but when I check it in preflight, the colour should only be tints of black, but it comes out as a cmyk instead, giving a yellowish tint to the grey areas.
I think the only way I can show you is if I can email the file to you, then you may understand a bit better, Where can I send it to? It’s only 900k, and I can send you the file that works and the new one that doesn’t.
