  • Problem FC8000 Over lapping cuts when cutting multiples

Posted by David Hammond on 21 October 2011 at 11:05

I have just got a repeat order for some sets of decals.

I did these several weeks ago, the first 25 went great, but since then i’ve had a problem.

The artwork was sent to me as an EPS, I’ve loaded that in the Illy, and sent to cutting master.

The file is of about 6 different size stickers, and I need to cut 50 sets.

I have added some padding around the decals in cutting master so when it cuts the border it is not against the text.

I have inputted the number I want in CM (i’ve tried 4 2×2 sets on the vinyl)

When it cuts the two side by side are fine, but the ones above are cutting about 10mm to low, and is cutting into the bottom decals.

I’ve messed about with the settings but I can’t work out what I’m Missing. (hot)

I thought advance after cutting would advance the vinyl x amount after cutting all 4?

it would not surprise me that cm is confused because the width is so close to the media width.

sort out a quantity say 8 up in illy then cut that

I re-arranged the decals, so it takes less space, and can fit 3 across the media. Its still the same problem.

When it cuts the border, the boarder of the top sets cuts into the text of the bottom sets.

Almost like the spacing needs to be greater than the padding of the border. But the spacing applied to each side so I can’t get as many out of the vinyl.

It’s got to be something simple, but I cannot work it out.

    Tried what you said Chris.

Placed 9 together in an illy file, and cut those.

I added horizontal rules to aid weeding. Bloody thing put the horizontal line right through the decals again. (hot)

    ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH! (hot)

I’m looking at CM in corel and your settings seem ok. I know CM is a bit fussy about groups so try grouping/ungrouping. I have advance after plot ticked but it is set to 0. My step size is .025 mm but everything else is similar. I’m a bit like Chris, I think CM is a poor piece of software and I would have expected better from its Flexi origin. When you compare the way it works compared with Signlab’s cutting you realise how very average it is.

Why don’t you just cut straight from illustrator? On my Mac it’s just Apple key and M. No need to mess about with cutting master.

Problem may come from the "overlap" parameter in the Panel tab?

I managed to successfully cut the vinyl. I added the padding around for the weed border, but no spacing between each set.

I got there in the end – just a little annoyed at the wastage. You live and learn.

I did notice that the overlap was active, even though neither boxes were ticked. Ticking the boxes, and un checking them made the overlap input grey out. Probably one of many glitches in CM2.

    Thanks for the help.

David did you rely on CM to apply the weeding box ? i would have drawn a box in the graphics prog and sent the whole thing. then any rotation and distances apart would have been more controllable and not relying on software to do it.

I did let CM do that Chris.

Never thought of doing in the Illy

Hi Dave, I use illustrator for everything and CM is essentially just the cutting tool, very much like cutline years ago

Been using illustrator and cm for 12months not had a problem until now.

Not really done a job like this before, just another part of my learning curve as to cm’s limitations.

Will certainly add the border in illustrator next time and uncheck the weed border option.

Good move, just use Illy for everything in terms of design and layout.

i did try once and once only to cut a van set from CM only thing i can find compatible with CM is the dustbin (just my view of cause) 😀 😉

    Each to their own.

People get so sentimental about software.

My dad and the other designer swear by quark.

Myself I quite like indesign (but hardly use it) they sit an pick holes in all day long, and avoid it like the devil. Its been too long for them to jump ship.

Just I have spent my time working with illustrator and cm – that’s what I am used to and what works for me (most of the time). I have no reason to change software.
