Printing onto High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
Posted by Craig Bond on 4 April 2008 at 20:13I have a JV3 and have a request to digitally print onto 1mm HIPS, has anyone done this? Or had any experience of it. At the moment I am thinking of printing onto vinyl and transferring the print onto the High Impact Polystyrene Boards.
Is it at all possible on the JV3 or is the material too thick?
Cheers
Craig

i could be wrong, but i believe you can print directly to 2mm rigid substrate from a JV3. i looked at this when deciding which printer i wanted to go for.
I’m almost positive it IS possible but from memory i think you need roller "attachment tables front and back" to allow it to be fed and exit the machine.
i would also imagine you will need some form of profile to print directly to a rigid surface if not un-coated.what size are the prints? HIPs only comes in 3’x2′ foot sheets.

The prints are 950mm x 250mm I can fit two/sheet. A lot of waste. I can see the need for support before and after the print as the whole thing will bend upwards which could be a disaster waiting to happen. As this is a one off (well 60off) I think my best bet is to print the vinyl first.
The reason why I was asking is the cost of the whole thing. If I could print direct then the unit price would come down as I will only need to cut the boards to size, instead I have to print the vinyl and apply the print then cut to size. Which inflates the whole cost.
I can’t farm this one out as the customer needs them on Tuesday (latest) and he only contacted me today.

if its not photo quality you need i would sub it to a trade only company. i am sure tradebrigade.com will print direct for you and at a reasonable price. but
not the most consistant in the quality department. that said… they do gaurantee their work and have an impressive line-up of kit. ive used them a few times in the past… -
oops… when i mean print direct, i mean print direct to the likes of hips and the like. that said mate… could they not be screen printed?

5-6 different colours and 3 different designs. To avoid excessive print screen make ups I thought digital printing would be far cheaper? Not that I am a screen print expert but it sounds costly to me for screen printing.

Hi craig i do a lot of health and safety signs most of the time it is onto 1mm hips i apply print media straight over the top and i have never had a problem. Hope this helps
