Printing onto Banner material – which side?
Posted by John Wilson on 13 September 2008 at 09:07I know it’s a bizarre question but I’ve just got some new banner material and it seems to be reverse wound
What side should I be printing on? I smooth side or the slightly rougher side?
It’s a saturday morning so leave me alone :lol1:

John
the smooth side is the normal side to print on
Its quite common for banner to be reverse wound, I found this out the hard way 😳Which make is it?

Cheers Peter
I’m not sure what make it is…… it’s been lying there for a while so it could be anything :lol1: Just ran out of my normal stuff so hunted in the workshop
Would it make a huge difference printing on the wrong side? 😕

Smooth side. Most banner pvc material is reverse wound like Peter said.

John,
I have printed on the wrong side, some stuff is fine but I did 20m on the wrong side of some total block, and all the solid colours ended up streaky. expensive mistake, I dont know why they reverse wind it, but it would help if they put a label or mark on it to show you it is reversed…..Peter

Isn’t one side coated and one side isnt? Coated side is usually a lot whiter then the other side.
Reverse wound because generally they are heavier rolls so you don’t need gloves to carry the rolls around. Well that’s what I think 😛

Cheers for the info people….. never really noticed the difference before until now so thank god I actually asked on here

I’ll throw a spanner in the works 🙂
I’ve found the same as you, reverse wound banner so I’ve been printing on the smooth side.
I’ve never been completely happy with the results, however the other day I quickly wanted to print a banner and forgot about it being reverse wound and printed onto the rough side. The results were much more consistent.
The next day I printed a banner with a lot of solid black onto the smooth side and had to reprint on the other side it as it was very streaky.Steve

maybe you were the exception to the rule, and your material was not reverse wound, What product was it?

reverse wound also a hangover from the Arizona printer.
squeeze material between finger and thumb for a few secs the side that sticks is usually the printing side. 😉

The material is from Doro Tape Peter.
I don’t do many banners but like anything it’s feast or famine so it’s better to have the material in stock for when you get that "I need it tomorrow" order 🙂Steve
