  • Printing on the wrong side of canvas

Posted by Steve Morgan on 24 December 2008 at 15:24

I thought that since I’ve got a bit of time on my hands today I’d have a go at printing on the canvas that I bought a couple of months ago. Well not really impressed and I remember Phil saying he’d done some without good results although others had said they were impressed.
For some reason , not sure why, I decided to try printing on the other side of the material – Now I am impressed, strange that there was no mention of which side to print with the material.

    Merry Christmas

as a digital media canvas will more likely to be reverse wound to prevent contamination. so its pretty easy to stick it in the wrong way and print onto the back. the print side normally has a bit of smoother feel to it as most have a sort of coating on the surface for the ink to adhere. at least it does on solvent ones we have used. the reverse seems a little rougher and the prints look a bit washed out and naff.

does anyone know where you can buy the canvas that looks like its surface has been coated with a pallet knife? its sort of textured as if its showing the brush marks of an oil painting? hope that makes sense? 😕 :lol1:
i think i heard spandex do it, but not sure, might give them a call after the break…

I use the wrong side (rough side) most of the time, the print comes out much better and also the material comes through the printer better.

Anyway what are you lot doing working 😮

The canvas I use has a mottled cotton effect on one side (the wrong side) and the correct side is usually a lot whiter without any imperfections.

I used frederick canvas from the USA sometimes, but prefer picasso canvas as it has a much higher white point.

The higher the white point, the better the results, especially with solvent printing, as it does not give the vibrancy of a waterbased ink.

    Hope that helps.

Rob, there are some wallpapers that have the finish you require too, if you don’t like the canvas type products.

We have used the canvas from Grafityp and it prints great. Only thing I’ve found is in this weather it goes very brittle and splits so you have to warm it with a heat gun when fitting to the frame, especially on the corners.

    Hi Steve,

Just wondering what printer are you using for your canvas prints, and what brand/type canvas are you using?

    Regards, Roger

    Roger,
I print with a VersaCamm, running EcoSol Max inks, and for the moment I’m printing onto a Hexis material. I also have piece of All Print Supplies canvas to try, which is not quite as white as the Hexis so that may be better for pics with warmer tones.

    Thanks Steve,

I only realised after I posted my question that there were two Steves on this thread.

I had a feeling that Stephen Morriss used to have an older HP, so wondered if that had been upgraded yet.

I’ve used a lot of different media on my old HP 3500, but not tried canvas yet. I’ve had a few enquiries about it, so have been wondering if I should invest in a roll myself.

It’s always handy when you know someone else is happy with a particular material.

    Regards, Roger
