hi yes you can print on ordinary vinyl i have done this many times.
when i priced the different vinyls printable 750mm wide from apa is about £50 for 50 mtr roll no need to print on ordinary anymore.
hope this helps. -
As Paul says, you can print on just about any vinyl with a solvent printer, but it should be said that you’ll always get a better result on the vinyl made for digital printing.
Also, most co’s handle digital material differently so as it is ‘clean’ when you get it. Computer cut will usually have hand marks to contend with, resulting in a poorer finish.

as has been said above, to add to this. if printing onto regular vinyl you will probably need to tweak the profiles for the media.
i.e. i tweaked metamark md5 digital profile and i was able to print onto almost any type of oracal vinyl. 651, 751 cast including clear. the downside to printing onto normal vinyls is you will experience more problems. pooling, washed looking prints, shadowing of branding from release liner & of course as shane says, printing onto contaminated vinyl. such as finger marks, dust etc going with brands of “digital” vinyl is the best way forward, most suppliers now offer profiles for your machine. -
yes, solvent printers can print onto most vinyls, same as rob says basically but each material has a unique white colour (white point), materials are then measured with a series of charts and fed back through the machine to create a profile.
You will be able to tweak most vinyls but best stick to digital vinyls that are profiled by your rip.

On th esubject of profiles. has anyone been able to get hold of one for the cadet for oracal vinyls? as oracal only do the versacamm rip. I’m using troop 5 (wasatch) with teh standard md5 rip atm. but Robs interested me now with his “tweeked” version 🙂

md5 profile will work perfect on oracal digital paul.
the tweaked version we have for standard vinyl, started life as the md5 profile. 😀 just play around with the settings until you get a result your happy enough with. that said, your not going to get it just as good as the digital vinyl prints. -
MD5 is amazing material and profiled very well on ours
No tweaking needed!!!! -
hi dave, i agree with you mate… the md5 works brill on md5 & oracal digital, (no tweaking needed) but… if you want to print onto regular vinyls like oracal 651 or 751, it needs tweaked. i say that is just normal for any vinyl though.

i just sneakily looked on our Shiraz RIP to see what profiles are available in the Ora-something range, I guess OraJet is Oracle material… so for the JV3-SP range
Orajet 3651 Gloss White 70mic 360×720 & 720×720.icc
Orajet 3751 Gloss White 60mic 360×720 & 720×720.icc
Orajet 3951 Gloss White 50mic 360×720 & 720×720.icc
Oracal 1640 Print Vinyl 100mic 360×720.icc
Oracal 640 Print Vinyl 80 mic 720×720.iccOn ours (JV3-S) we have 751, 3640, Window Mesh, 3751, 3951
No profiles for the Roland.. oh well and I dont use Oracle stuff so dont know what codes are what anyway but these are ICC’s but are calibrated in London and shared with us. Wont be 100% accurate but gives a good starting point.

i have every single profile available for all printers on the go by oracal. i was given them last month and will be available for download in the UKSG members section over the next week or two… there is lots and big files at that… so havent got round to it yet. they are on two CD’s…
that said… from memory i dont think there are profiles for the 751 or 651 range.dave i think the ones you have listed are from the digital range mate.
