Posted by alleyesonme on 18 May 2011 at 09:32Hi guys/girls were thinking to supply customised carrier bags for retail shops on a small quantity around 500-1000 pcs were looking to do inhouse but not sure best way to print? is there a printer we can use with sublimation ink or better to screen print them?
Thanks in advance

Sublimation would end up too costly for that amount – I screen print onto paper bags but if your looking to do plastic I think it would be flexograhic printing.

Hi John thanks for the kind reply, never heard of this printing method before but seems like some expensive equipment for the moment 🙁 im just trying to get the ball rolling and seeing what sells and what people are interested in so i dont mind making a few pennies per bag and then maybe later down the line i will look into investing in some proper equipment, perhaps screen printing will be more cost effective?

Screen printing onto paper bags in one colour is cost effective for orders of between 50 – 500 bags. If you’re ordering in 1000’s then its cheaper to go direct to the bag manufacturers as they print on flat stock and make them into bags afterwards, this allows for multi colour work.

Hi thanks again, paper bag and plastic carrier bags is the same process via screen printing? we have many retail customers around here as we are a wholesale area so alot want customised carrier bags packagings etc but cant afford minimum quantities of 1000-5000 etc…. so im trying to make it easily accessable for all. thanks again for your time i will look into screen printing for now.

carrier bags are "give away items" if your customers are not prepared to pay for a 1000+ I doubt if they will want to pay more than a few pennies each for 500 or so,
so I without investing a load of money, doubt if you can make a profit down this road.Hope you can prove me wrong, good luck

Like Peter has said, they do expect them for pennies but for small runs you can charge a lot more per bag than on the larger runs.
New start up companies or companies attending exhibitions, seminars etc don’t want to place orders for 1000’s of bags and are happy to pay a premium and receive smaller qty’s.
I’m not saying you’ll become a millionaire but there is a little money to be made with the right customer base.
Cheers John
