    Hi

We have been sent some artwork files generated in Quark and saved as PDF’s. Four out of the five printed perfectly, but the last one is giving all kinds of problems.

When we print in Versaworks, cream coloured squares appear where you would imagine a text box would be. We can’t open the files in illustrator as they are full of windows fonts. Allegedly, you can’t outline fonts in Quark – is this correct.

Any Quark or Versaworks geniuses able to shed any light on how to fix this or at least advise on why this happens.

    Thanks

    Dorian

Can you open the Quark files ??

Quark is a page make-up program, great for designing brochures and that kind of print. I would not use Quark for large format out put though.

Did they send you the fonts as it may be that the pdf has not embedded the fonts correctly at source.

Give your customer a buzz to resend the file. CMYK not rgb.

One solution is to open the PDF in Photoshop, and save it as a high res JPG.
Done this loads of times when having problems with PDFs. Make sure you rasterise it at 150dpi minimum at actual size, and the print quality should be
    fine.

Personally, I think PDFs cause more problems than they are worth – I’d much
rather have a native artwork file, then I can do what I want to it.

Does the pdf view correctly in Reader? I use Pstill and that normally sorts any pdf files that will not import properly into my programmes. Pstill will flatten any transparencies and convert embedded fonts to curves, basically simplifying the file and not relying on the RIP to interpret the file.

    Thank you good Sirs.

The problem job was a pull-up banner and after much tooing and froing we got the files to print, the client was able to export as a full size eps which eventually went through the rip with no problem.

Phil, we don’t run quark here so opening was not an option.

Jamie, I will try exporting as a PSD/ JPG when I get a chance, I like to have solutions to these problems when they arise.

Alan, Yes the file did view properly in Adobe Acobat, but when opened in Illustrator the ‘boxes’ were visible. Pstil looks like its worth a look as problems like this arise occasionally when clients supply their own artwork. Hopefully there is a free version of PStil on the interweb!!!

Pstill is not free but there is a trial on their website http://www.pstill.com. This will add a watermark. I’m finding that the majority of pdf file will import successfully into X5 – Pstill takes up the rest snd the resultant pdf then imports into X5.
If you only want to process pdf/eps and save out again as pdf the cheaper version will suit.
