  • Printing a number of labels/stickers then cutting on cutter

Posted by Steve Thornton on 20 November 2006 at 19:58

Well after my welcome on the ‘say hello’ forum I promised I would pose a couple of questions.

Equipment I am using GerberEdge, Jetster XL printer and gerber wide format vinyl cutter.
Software I am using Coral Draw, Composer and Mistral(Spandex approved software I believe).
Problem I am Having when I design say a simple sticker and print a number of them on my printer or edge say 50 of them, I believe that there is a way for the cutter to recognise that there is a cut to be made… something to do with 1%cyan border.
I am sorry for what I believe is most probably a basic question but after 30 years in the RAF this is a new start for me. I also have a IS400 volume engraver from gravograph….what a cracking machine..brilliant.
Any help will be much appreciated, even if its only a link to a website, I believe in learning by doing the job myself.

steve, when you print you need to make a registration mark(s)
The % cyan is just the cut line I would think, and is the colour of the contour the plotter should follow. dont know the software you are using, The plotter then can be aligned to the reg mark, and be told to cut the outline.
Not easy to explain, but may give you a starting point.

Thanks for the quick reply Peter, I seem to be living and breathing vinyl at the moment, even spending my off time trawling the Internet for answers and then emailing them to myself at work. Is this sad or normal?

Just read your post again Peter the prints do have registration marks (small squares in corners) but when i try to cut with the plotter it says there is nothing to cut?

you need to make an outline or a contour cut for the plotter, in the design stage. some rips depend on a colour to define the cut (usually something that is unlikely to be present in the design hence a %of cyan) So you need to define the cut line, and tell the plotter what is is, signlab for instance has a separate cut line so the plotter "sees it" some software needs to be "told" what the cut line is.

Sorry if its not clear, but its not always as easy as it sounds.

    Steve

We’ve just had a jetster installed from spandex
What you need i think! is a clipping path round about your image for the plotter to see.

    Morning Steve.

I use the same equipment as you also. If you want a cutline around a Jetster print I was told by Spandex to use Photoshop to add a clipping path, in Mistral you can then see the cutline before you print. I said to them about the 1% cyan colour way of doing things, but the girl doing my training didn’t know how to use CorelDraw!! ( I am still trying to find out how to do it)

Remember to move the black squares in from the edge of the vinyl, otherwise the cutter wont find the first square as the roller will be over the top of it.

    thanks

Lots of good info here, thanks to you all.
I have printed some stickers and yes the plotter does find it hard to find the registration marks. How do you move them in Mistral, is it in print settings?

    Hi Steve

to move the black squares, you need to go to Tools, then Options.
Click on the Cut tab at the top, then click Driver Options.
You then need to change the left value under the margin box. I usually set it to 4.0cm.

you need to do this before you open up a new job.

    hope this helps

Cheers Neill, The girl at Spandex would be the delightful Kerry!. She does know her stuff. I think once I have done the jobs a few times it will be just like riding a bike, as they say practice makes perfect.
