Printer/Plotter to print Posters and Vinyl for Exterior Use
Posted by Boz on 5 September 2009 at 23:09I want to print posters and window film or vinyl for shop display and other purposes, therefore require a plotter which uses UV ink to prevent fading,
and my budget is around £3000, or cheaper the better,
would anyone know which plotter is best for this purpose and the best place to find one?
It would help if this plotter includes cutting too. Please help!
Thanks very much!Ezekiel Ikhinmiwn replied 16 years, 1 month ago 7 Members · 7 Replies -

A little introduction in the say hello section may help a response.
But welcome anyway,
You need to do a little homework, UV printers are a process and nothing to do with fading, they are also very expensive,Peter

UV printer at that price won’t happen.
Solvent machine might in the SP300. You’ll get good outdoor durability with the eco solvent inks.

Cheap printer cheap result. Do some research on these boards and you will find all your answers. Join and you will find even more, including knowledge and experience from the best group in the business. Non UV printing will need to have Laminate also. So now in your £3000 or less budget you will need a laminator. A plotter or plotter printer and a laminator will set you back more than your budget. Maybe have a look at your numbers and see what you can afford.
Time spent researching will pay back ten fold

Boz,
It’s difficult to offer sensible advice without knowing more about your circumstances.
Are you established in this industry and have some kit already, or are you a complete newcomer starting from scratch?
Do you already have a customer base for posters and shop displays, maybe subbing out production, or is it a market you are going to try to break into?

don’t forget that there is uv curing ink and uv resistant inks(water based).
you can use a special vinyl for uv resist water based inks but it has its problems.

Thanks for your reply, we are currently using HP designjet 800 and we have been printing large posters for indoor use for our customers, recently we have been asked to print artworks on adhesive film which then sticks onto shop windows.
But the first problem we face is that the ink fades under exposure to light.
And the second problem is that our printer does not print on film or vinyl. We are looking at second hand or refurbished printers at £3000-£5000, I have researched some solvent printers and uv printers such as HP designjet5500 UV, designjet z320, but unsure of what type to choose. Just wondering if I would be able to get some suggestions or advise from maybe those who have used a similar printer before?
Thank you for your helpBoz
