If you have a hard copy, I would get it scanned on a large format scanner. They usually
go up to about 400dpi, so the result should be fine for printing.
I agree, scanning is the way to go, but if your artwork is very large you would have to get it scanned on a drum scanner, but if its framed artwork then a digital camera shot maybe your only option.

even if the image is larger than A4, its easy if you have CS3 photoshop? There is a photomerge wizard that is amazing! Scan the artwork in A4 chunks then put them all into photomerge and it joinsd them all seamlessly in seconds! We use it all the time!
