I was wondering if someone can help me.

sometimes when i print onto white vinyl or anything else for that matter, i get grainy strokes which render the print useless due to poor quality. this happens sometimes and sometimes prints fine, i did think it was maybe dust stuck to the vinyl at first but its not.

iv just had a new black print head fitted and wipers replaced etc but still have the same problem.

so basically when i print for example a 2m x 1m piece, i sometimes get grainy sandy effect which does not have the ink fully laid as the rest of the piece and this effect dags on in thick lines.

    any help much appreciated

Is that just started or it’s been from new and you just realized ?

I had similar problem last week after service and at the end of the day i found service man (roland service) left head unit on high position. When i put it back on low the nice print came back.

Are you printing from Versawork or something else?

Have you tried contact and ask roland?

Michael it started recently and even after a roland service a few weeks ago the problem still remains.

the heads are set on the high position as when they are on low position i get alot of smudging whilst printing (another problem!) as if the heads are too close to the media.

i will try switching the heads back to the low position and see how it goes but i know the smudging will start again and i will endup switching the heads back upto high again.

i did think it was a heating or vacuum issue at first but maybe the heads on low position might sort out the problem

    Sorry to hear that.
Did you tell the roland guy about the smudging on low position. It’s definitely something wrong with your printer. Is the service man just doing service and don’t care what the result is? I would ring them again and force to fix it.

I had a problem with cheap media buckling and getting in the way of the print head. I ended up dropping the temperature down on the print and dry settings and now its stopped doing it – the media is still crap but it means I can get rid of it.

Also I sometimes had a grainy effect if the media was a tad to heavy to be pulled easily. I’ve got one roll of pop up media which is terrible for static and prints awful too, a lot of it comes down to media quality I think

Im using metamark md3 which is a good quality media iv been told.

I thing the feed calibration needs adjusting to pull more weight?

I would say the same as Andy,

even if it is good material, sometime changes in the weather will mean ur temperature might not need to be as high as the ambient temperature in the room is higher than normal.

try lowering ur print temps and see if that helps

I had a similar problem and again it was the room temp was to cold and when the vinyl was warming and expanding on the printer bed the print head was touching the vinyl as previously stated id try turning the print heater down a touch or if the room is cold pre heat the room !!!
