  • Print banding problem, advice needed please?

Posted by John Dempsey on 28 April 2015 at 10:19

    Hello,

I am new to this site, and also new to solvent printers. We are screen printers for over 30 years, and have farmed out any digital work for the past few years, but we have recently decided to dip our feet into the digital printing set-up.

We recently bought a Galaxy Printek Eco-Solvent printer 1.6m. We have found the printing is ok on 3 pass / 4pass on vinyl, it is very good with 8 pass, however when printing onto poster printer the print isnt good, with very visable banding, and if printing on 3 pass it is terrible, especially with certain colour like grey and with solid blocks oof colour. There seems to be two types of banding, a consistent thin lines, up close they look like magenta, and then the other banding is very inconsistent, creating a dark streak, next to a patchy streak, have a look at the attached pics.

Any help here would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    John

This sounds like a profile issue………..it will need to lay down more ink on poster paper as this is more absorbent that vinyl.
Chinese machines typically only have a "one fits all" profile.

    Hope this helps

    Hello John,

Many thanks for your reply. Is it possible to somehow install a new profile, that lays down more ink?

What software are you using, the RIP would normally handle such things as number of passes & profiles for different media types. You should really have lots of different profiles you can select from depending on what substrate your printing to & what brand of media you are using.

    Hello Martin,

In the rip, it doesnt have an option for different substrates. Can these other substrate profiles be installed somehow, or can the printer be used with a better rip software?

This is a Chinese machine normally running either 1 or 2 Epson DX5 heads……default RIP is Maintop? Some run on Photoprint/Flexisign.

Chances are your profile choice will be limited.

    Hello John,

Yes it is photoprint, and has one dx5 printhead, so cant another rip with better options be used with this printer? To make our screenprint films we use an epson pro 4000, and the rip for that doesnt let you print halftones, however with a the wasatch rip, you can print perfect halftones with the printer, and lets you lay down more black to get a nice opaque film positive. So could washatch or a similar rip with better options work with this printer?

photoprint is pretty good ( that’s what I use).

Have you contacted the supplier about profiles?

    Hello John,

Thanks to your advice about the profiles, I have now contacted them, just waiting for their reply. So the fact that you use photoprint, when you want to print on poster paper, what do you select etc?

    Regards,

    John
