pricing of vinyl lettering
Posted by dazlad on 18 June 2004 at 08:05hi just had a customer come into the shop and he wants his burger van done in vinyl lettering and he asked me for a price, i said i will need to measure it up and work out the price but then he asked me how much per letter cus his usual sign maker charges by the letter.
please advise me on the subject as this could be my first “big job” and i dont want to loose it.
sorry i keep asking questions – one day i might be able to give someone some answers.
cheers and respect to you all

Hi Dazlad,
I’d tell him if he wants just “letters” go to halfords and make his own signs!
We’re in the design business and our “letters” are vinyl graphics!Sounds like he wants as cheap as chips, at the end of the day he’ll get what he pays for, cheap letters = cheap looking stickers!
On the pricing if you work out how much vinyl it will use then price between £10 – £15 per metre (610mm wide) you wont be far off.
The smaller the text per metre the more you charge, don’t forget to add a bit for fitting.Hope it helps a bit
Cheers

P.S when fitting burger vans, it is customary for the owner to give you a free lunch! 😀

Hmmmmm
I’m not in the design business. If letters is what they want then letters is what they get. The man with the money calls the tune and I see my job as being purely to relieve him of it. I’m a tart and have no pride. 🙂
As a rough guide to letter price we would start at 20p per inch. Up that for anything more expensive than a calendared vinyl, difficult to weed fonts and anything else we can think of. Reduce for volume, but if it’s only one burger van then that won’t apply.
You might also need to vary depending on what area you are in, level of competition, overheads etc etc.
The free lunch is no good to me. The doctor has banned me from eating stuff like that. 🙁

If I was in your boots I would cover the price of all your costs and slap a good days pay on top of it. At that price you should get the job and make a little bit of money. If you get the job absolutely insist that the van is steam hosed because they may look clean but all burger vans I have done have had a film of grease on them. maybe that why they never rust
Good luck

My last company who were not the cheapest in the area charged:
1″ – 27p each
2″ – 37p each
3″ – 46p each
4″ – 56p each
5″ – 86p each
6″ – £1.01 eachGold/Silver add 10%
Arc text plus 10%We would then charge min of £25 per hour (2 hours would be minimum charge) fitting mind you she would try and charge more at times depending if the bank statement had come in that morning.
She used to say if the job was percieved of good quality charge more – I used to reply whose perception is that yours or the Clients.
If there is a lot of text I suppose it might work out better for the Client on the charge per metre of material.

mike i checked your prices mate and dont see them as being expensive, pretty cheap actualy mate.. we price per letter on most stuff, not all..
we start at 30p i think 1inch and by 4ich we are at a £1 it doesnt just jump fast like that all the way.. but weeding 10 letters at half an inch takes longer that 10 at 4 inch? your stilll weeding and taping as long but maybe not as much material. but our time is worth far more than a little bit of vinyl. its swings and roundabouts really. settle for what you think best suits you.i did a burger van recently.. the guy sat down with me and all he wanted was block text and a good price. i told him we priced per letter upfront but typing the text into sizes available on screen would let me find out what hieght the text should be.
he sat and watched as i draw rectangles on the screen the size of his panels that will take the print.
i then typed in the name of the burger van and any other details he wanted. i then showed him on the screen the hieght of each letter.
next, i lifted a sheet of paper with the hieghts and prices of the text on it. i showed him the prices then banged in the amount of letters mutiplied by the prices. he could see it came to something like £220 (my own opinion at this point was it was pretty pricey for what he wanted. i said, if you want it done and leave my £50 deposit now. ill have the job ready for you tommorrow and ill knock £40 off.. he didnt reply. he dug into his pocket and said “there you go £180, i couldnt get fairer than that.”
this week his mate came in asked for simular and said he was recommended.
the thing is.. i was straight with him. nothing planned and gave him a good job in the end. -
i find that prices seem to rise the closer to london you get. and some othere scattered areas..
not just on signs of course. just the cost of living is higher.. signs prices just follow 🙄 -
well i dont know about you folks but this discussion has helped me no end …Thanks
Regards Brian 😀 😀 😀
