I was asked by a friend to do a precut stonechip install to his rear arch.

Ive only done colour change vinyls before, so it was new, but thought it would be a doddle.

    Now.

The vinyl wasnt proper stonechip guard, merely clear vinyl.

I used an app tape to get the vinyl into position.

I think (after looking on youtube) that this is where i went wrong.

Should I have done a wet application for this? As in window films, or proper stonechip guards?! I got a fingerprint on the inside, and hence, the film was written off.

i left the job unable to isntall the film, and most annoyed with myself for not managing it….

    Any advice is most welcome.

Not done stonechip before but clear vinyl is a sod for fingerprints. I usually stick some tabs of masking or narrow app tape to hold onto so I don’t touch the back of the vinyl.

stone guard film must be fitted wet. If you buy it by the metre at 610 you will need a 3rd pinch roller as this is very soft and will not cut properly.

You can however make a template and cut by hand for the small jobs.

Clean hands and soapy liquid ensures a good fit without those fingerprints

You Mention that it was clear vinyl but not which type i.e. monomeric, polymeric or cast; if the arch was ‘arched’ then monomeric would not work, polymeric would struggle depending on the ‘archiness’, only cast would take to compound contours when applied as a sheet and certainly using application tape would not allow the material to contour.

Good luck with your next attempt Anthony.

well, hes got a roll of them precut. and alraedy had one applied to the other side, so im guessing they’re just a cheap polymeric.

The reason he asked me was that his cousin normally does them, as hes been in the signage industry years, and continues to mess them up.

After i did a grafityp carbon diffuser for him, he asked me to do these, and theyre just over A3 length in size as they go up onto the rear arch.
