  • Possible ink starvation – Rockhopper DX4 heads (Opal Tiara)

Posted by David Rogers on 4 December 2014 at 09:43

One of the yellow heads (bank 2) is under performing. About only 1/2 as much ink getting through as it should, but generally all the nozzles DO work.

Changed the damper as a matter of course, but made little or no difference.

The other yellow head (1) is perfect. Both are fed from the same bulk ink reservoir.

Changed it again and still nothing better. Ink flows out freely enough when you do a clean.

I’d suspected a poor seal under the manifold / cracked spigot allowing just the tiniest amount of air back in, but it doesn’t get worse the longer it’s left.

    Suggestions?

can you change the supply lines between heads it would rule out ink starvation problem i would then change the manifold as the manifolds have mesh filters in them and these can become clogged especially with some third party inks. I had similar problem years ago and broke manifold apart and was surprised the mount of particles trapped by the filter

I think it could be a bad bottle of yellow ink.

After years of using NASDAR Lyson inks it’s a bit weird to get a duff bottle.

changed a damper after ONE day & it was covered in a fair few lumps and deposits…still feint and patchy print on one…other head still OK the rockhopper yellow.

And to add insult to injury – lost 75% of one yellow head on the JV3 too.

anybody else had issues with QPS supplied NASDAR inks?

Just phoned them – explaining issue.

serial number taken & one litre of ink and some flush being sent as no other issues reported.

Shame I’ll have to potentially bin 4 litre of contaminated ink as they were all topped up from the suspect bottle and replace 4 dampers, maybe 4 manifolds and if the heads are well blocked get them reverse flushed.

Oh, and the do warrant that the ink won’t damage your system.

send all of the contaminated parts back to QPS i had a problem with light cyan before and got the same no other cases reported. How long have you had the conversion to Nazdar inks done i have seen non compatible inks cause this problem

Rockhopper been on nasdar for over 6 years. (Over 2 years with us)
jv3 about 3 – 4 months since they fitted the bulk system.

VERY hesitant to run the mimaki as it’s more of a pain to strip should it get any worse.

I’ve not heard of any problems with Nazdar inks and I have a few customers running it. Both in bulk and cartridge format. Chris at QPS is normally very good at keeping on top of this sort thing so I’m sure he’ll get to the bottom of it….

Agreed Stafford. Chris is pretty on the ball. If it wasn’t for me having issues within a day of each other with major ink flow problems / heads blocked / manky dampers on BOTH machines and BOTH yellow, I’d likely put it down to a ‘IT happens’.
Just went this morning "at least we’ve got two machines". ..then both buggered.

Back to running with a reduced yellow ink flow on the jv3 and one iffy head on the rocky.

At least it’s Friday. ..I’m off home.
