  • Poor quality cuts on Graphtec CE 5000-60

    Hello folks.
I have been having an issue for about a month with my Graphtec.
It used to cut just fine. I don’t use it on a daily basis, but the blade is not old and the cutting strip is in good shape.
    🙁
About a month ago, my friend showed me how to switch the tool setting to pen.
    I did re-set it to plot (the settings just now are 9 15U 0 16 20 3)
I do not think it is the offset.
    The vinyl is Oracal 651.
On fine stuff, the cuts look like they were made by the machine if it was blindfolded and having a seizure. I had the thing working OK but then had to do the pen setting again, now I am back to seizure city on ½" thin type.
    :yikes:
Any advice would be appreciated. I am not on the boards much anymore since I had to get a real job. Thanks!
    :praiseyou:
    Love….Jill

Sorry I don’t have a graphtec so not really in a postion to help.
But it has to be connected with changing over from plotter to pen settings surely and therefore presumably you haven’t got the plotter setting back? I’m assuming you have a copy of the manual but just in case there’s a pdf here:-

Good luck – I know how frustrating it is when machines play up :smiles:

    Thank you, Phill!
In looking though manuals and other posts, it seems that not only did I need to have it at 9U rather than 15, but it needed to be on the tangential (sp) setting.
Hopefully I have enough vinyl for the rest of this job, I have already cut it twice
Needless to say, I wish I still drank wine.

I only recently discovered tangential and now use that for intricate cutting. My current settings are 09U, offset 0, force 16, speed 15, quality 1. Although I use a smart knife so settings may be different

I’ve had a graphtec for years now and never once changed the settings for a pen – but let me know how you get on Jill

I’ve recently had issues with mine, leaving hangnails making it difficult to weed.

Yesterday I took the pinch rollers off and cleaned them, when I say cleaned, removed tiny bits of vinyl that fell between the black holder and the wheel. I also made new test cuts and found that my offset is now set to -4.

I’m using smart blades, could it be they’ve sent the wrong blade?

Might try switching it to the red top one to see if that makes a difference, if so then I’ll get the blue one replaced .

Offset should be 0 using smart knives

I know, that’s what it’s been set to, decided to try and fix the issue yesterday and that’s when I found it to cut better with an offset of -4.

That should not be the case so I’m gonna try swapping the blade for the only other one I have which is the red top one and see if that makes a difference

    How old is the blade?

Remember to change the tool to the 15 blade, not the 9U if using the red top blade.

It’s about a year old I think and still cuts paper with ease, I’m using 17 for pressure and it cuts through ok. Now I think of it, I’m not sure if this hangnail issue started when I got that blade.

Thanks David, think I might of forgotten to do that.

I change mine every couple of months. Time for a new blade me thinks

Wow, never changed them every fee months, I remember doing that when I first started and got a lecture about sending black sharp blades and not upping the force.

I think I’m just gonna get a few new ones anyway just in case as it’s got to be the blade as everything else is tight

I keep 5 blades, change them every few months, then when I’ve gone through 4 I get them renewed. Means I’ve always got a stock of new ones. Probably a bit of overkill but been caught out in the past with no spares

We had an issue with out Graphtec cutting really badly last week.

The carriage was loose on the bearings, meaning that when the blade was dragging, the carriage had play and it wouldn’t cut well at all. Holding the carriage see if you can rock it forwards & backwards, we have less than 1mm of play in it, but last week it was 2-3mm which really buggered it up.
