  • Plastic scraper to stripping

Posted by Alistair Richards on May 26, 2010 at 5:56 pm

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good plastic scraper for vinyl stripping, and supplier.

I have some plastic blades from Grafityp which are really good, but the holder they come with is naff. I need something more robust.

    Thanks 😀

The rubber disc that fit to a drill work for me! Expensive but worth the time saved and muscle!
(sorry, forgot the name of them)!

This what you mean Matty, http://www.jagsignsupplies.com/aqshop/c … hp?id=1300

Any good on vans or not?

Still could do with a decent scraper if anyone knows though.

only thing i found was plastic chisels from draper tools,
I dont think scrapers work very well though, except on Glass.

A body shop supply company will stock "toffee wheels" a smaller but far cheaper alternative to jags high priced offering.

As Peter says, toffee wheels, that’s what I couldn’t remember! The Jag ones are pricey and wear down very quickly.

There fine to use on vehicles and personally wouldn’t use any scrapper on a vehicle even if plastic! Run a plastic squeegee down your car and see the marks left!

There is liquid vinyl remover similar to Nitromorse (NEVER use that tho) that works pretty well.

It’s not for scraping vinyl off, just to lift the edges when stripping to save my finger nails, and for working glue when softened. 😉

    Ah, bless ya!!

Best thing, a plastic scrapper that comes with car body filler!

Like a squeegee but a lot thinner.

I prefer to use a single edge blade, hard to get hold of nowadays, but snap on vans sell them in boxes of 100 for about a tenner
usefull for all sorts of stuff.

You need to be care full but they are the best way to lift a corner of the vinyl

Matty have used that vinyl remover thought it may be easier 🙄 it is more of a pain than doing it the hard way, it sort of melt’s the vinyl a bit like Peter said like nitromores and the gunge it leaves is unbelievable to get rid of 👿 think of the worst cold you have ever had 👿

I’ve never had the ‘snot’ effect when using it, but maybe just lucky!

Saying that if we were all so precious about our finger nails as Alistair seems to be I wouldn’t strip, fit or clean anything!!!!!

Matty maybe just left to long 😀 it wasn’t pleasant 😀 maybe Alistair has no finger nails ? I don’t use a blade cause I can’t be trusted with sharp instruments 😀

I’ve got a couple of these q.r tools – get them from motor factors as well. They have metal blades or you can get plastic ones, sure they were from Victory but can’t see them on the website? I use a hairdryer (hi tech!), warm the vinyl and use my "special tool" . . . .

Best thing for getting glue off is Tar & Glue Remover, again from motor factors. If there’s lots of glue soak it with the tar & glue remover on a rag then use the plastic blade . . . does get a bit snotty tho!

Lift Sticks are handy….I can’t recall who sell them though.

Very similar in material to the tools Draper sell that Peter mentioned.

I have used a L’iL Chizler with satisfying results for many years, combined with a hair dryer to loosen the grip of the vinyl with Rapid Remover for the adhesive and loads of paper towels.
The Chizler does save the fingernails, but on a big job I sometimes get bad blisters just from friction, not the hair dryer.

Spandex do some good plastic scrapers same size as gold squeegees. They are green and have two sharp edges – they work well.

    good luck,
