PLANNING CONSENT QUESTION??
Posted by Stephen Ingham on 1 May 2007 at 22:28hi all, just a quick querie….
If a customer does not get planning approval for his or her new signage and whilst fitting is taking place questions are asked by planning officers or someone like that, where do the sign fitters/ company stand??
Is there any responsability placed on the sign company?? or on the customer??
any assistance appreciated
cheers

Stephen,
I always advise customers its their responsibility to check if planning permission is required, as for questions when fitting, the answer from me would be, "sorry mate, I’m just doing my job, no idea about planning etc. best ask the owner of the property"
that way you don’t incriminate yourself.
But, something tells me though, that this is a retrospect question you are asking?

Stephen, the customer is responsible for sorting out planning permission unless the sign company or fitters have agreed to do this for them. I always use to tell customers when planning permission was required and use to supply drawings if required to help where I could but it can be quite time consuming so didn’t use to get to involved.
If you are actually fitting the sign and someone comes round I would imagine they could stop you from continuing until it had been confirmed that planning permission had been approved so if you are worried that there may be a problem make sure you get paid up front or at least a large enough deposit to cover your expenses. Once the sign is up the customer can be instructed to remove it, normally within 7 days, if this isn’t done then the council will remove it and charge them for it’s removal. I have actually put signs up for people and then been paid a few weeks latter to take them down again. -
hi, thanks for the responses.
the reason i asked the question really was that i was fitting a sign and went into the sarnie shop next door and was asked what it was i was doing, and when i said i was fitting a sign next door the lady behind the counter said "have they got planning consent to do that?" and i responded with "dunno, sorry, i’m just a fitter.."
cheers

Different councils have Different rules/conservation areas, historical importance etc.etc
but if you’re replacing a sign like for like you should be okay 😕 -
