  • Perspective rules of thumb, curved/ spherical surfaces

    Hi all,

I am using Vinyl Cut V4 LTR software and a 3000 series Graphtec cutter.
On occasion I am asked to put text and designs on spherical / ovoid buoys.
Is there a rule of thumb about spacing and mounting vinyls for application to a ‘football’ shape, either above or below the circumference?

Or, does more sophisticated cutting software have function for accommodating this?

Many thanks for your thoughts, if I have made myself clear!

    All the best,

    Barney

18 Months on and I am still wondering, any ‘proper’ makers out there with any thoughts?

    All the best! 🙂

Do you mean you want to try and counteract the distortion of text as it wraps around sphere?

Have you seen what you’re trying to achieve done before and if so could you post a photo?

depends how big these things are, for really awkward shapes a bit trial and error but cover the area you want with application tape draw on it the shape of the area to letter in and remove, carefully lay flat, scan or photo the tape.
this is the guide of the shape of the base lines for the lettering, the side angles show the perspective.
using the tape gives you a indication of how far you can go before it creases so will the vinyl.
other one line pull a pin line on the object and cut the application tape between the letters a fit one letter at a time on to the pin line.

the envelope tool in corel i use to pull the text to the shape looks all wrong till you fit it then looks straight.

    Hello All,

Sorry to have belly ached about a lack of response and then not responded!

Chris: Great to have practical advice, I see how that relates to the actuality but not sure how to relate to to your advice on the envelope tool? Do you reckon to do the practical app paper exercise and then make an envelope that shape in your software package before designing?

Alex, pictures attached but my enquiry is pretty general, obviously we are often placing vinyls on surfaces that aren’t flat so I am looking for newbie advice on how to make vinyls that look all wrong until they are applied and then look right! Especially in the case of one of these buoys which is cylindrical shaped with a half dome top!

Thanks for responses, look forward to hearing more, Barney.

think the R is just a standard R with a little gigery pokery whilst fitting.

the long word only visualize it in a oblong lay a straight edge around the ball touching the two bottom corners of your oblong the gap in the middle is the distance of the arc. type the word out to the length and height required and bend it the arc distance.
at the centre of the ball will be no arc alteration the further away from the centre towards the top the more the arc distance
or hows your maths and find the radius, bit of string to find the segment length then magic happens.

although i would try marking the base line the cutting the word out as normal and slit the app tape three quarter down between the letters and fit. bending the tape to the line as you go.
