  • pc damage from an open lead is this true?

Posted by Russ on 10 August 2005 at 18:48

I have a couple of usb ports at the rear of my tower, so if I need to plug in a pen drive or card reader I would have to dive over the back of the tower, so I fitted an usb extension lead which gives me an open ended adaptor making it simple to exchange plug-in’s.

I have been told today by a customer that the open lead can or will cause damage to my computer, he also said that if you leave a mobile phone charger pluged in with no phone attached it can also cause damage ( to the phone at later charges) assuming the mains is on, dose anyone know if the above two items are true.

    Thanks Russ

    false on both counts Russ.

I am an ex computer tech, and both are urban myths.

    Untrue

Or maybe you could get a USB drive fitted to the front of your tower like this one here

There is loads on the market that do the same job and maybe cheaper
