Panti bliss has defended the sign outside Pantibar after it emerged Dublin City Council issued a warning over it. Earlier the Herald reported that the popular gay bar received a warning from DCC after complaints were made about the sign allegedly contravening planning permission.

Panti, aka Rory O’Neill, took to Facebook to defend the sign, saying it adds to Capel Street. “I’ll point out for the sake of accuracy that the Pantibar sign is not neon – it’s a traditional backlit sign.”

“I’ll also point out that there were no complaints about the bog standard backlit beer company sign it replaced.” “I’ll also point out that our GORGEOUS sign adds to the street, rather than takes away from it. It’s a beautiful landmark for an often overlooked street.”

“The sign was designed by Niall Sweeney, one off the greatest graphic designers this country has ever produced (arguably the greatest) and was handcrafted with great care by local Dublin craftsmen. Indeed, the designs specifications were so particular that a number of signage companies balked at the commission because the technique demanded was beyond their capabilities.”

“The sign is a perfect example of 21st century Irish signage and craftsmanship, in an area of the city blighted with cheap, badly designed, poorly thought out signage and shop fronts.”
