  • Panels Falling off Wall – Self Adhesive Tape

We’re having trouble with a recent installation where the self adhesive tape is failing to stick to the painted wall.

To give you a bit more info:

We have applied a selection of images (reverse printed onto clear acrylic) to a matt painted wall.

The wall is slightly curved, but before you say that’s exactly why, we have built up tape to ensure the curve is filled.

We have tried the clear gel tape (with red backing) and foam tape so far. They seem to stick well and then a few days later, the odd panel will just fall off the wall.

The installation spans across other painted walls (different colour/paint) which have stuck just fine.

Any ideas on some kind of extremely high tac tape that can deal with matt painted walls?

There are some very cheap brands of matt paint on the market that have very little stick value, I did some decals for a show and when testing the panel before hand found it almost useless for adhesion. You might get away with a watered down pva glue and water coat before applying the tape but it might also need a new paint if you have no option but to use tape.

    Cheers Kevin,

PVA isn’t a bad idea, that might be my second option.

One supplier suggested a fine grade wet and dry (then clean) before applying tape.

I tried this in the office today and it ripped the bloody plaster off!

Let’s see how that goes on site.

I’ve got the same issue with the a single panel at the moment! Stuck around 30 panels up and just 1 keeps dropping off! Re-done it 3 times now with no joy! Glue is the next step for me!

    Is the wall freshly painted?
Possibly a VOC free paint which is a bit of a nightmare for sticking to.
PVA all the way for me

Thanks for all the ideas guys, I went back to check a few days ago and it’s still up on the wall.

What I did in the end is lightly sand the wall area, used tabs of foam tape (for temporary hold) with additional glue behind for the final fix.
