hi folks ive to redo a large sign …abot 25 ft x 3ft .its an x perodo car sign the lettering is not raise but embedded in the sign so its nice and flat . i toyed with the idea of using vinyl to cover the board …but yellow over black lettering …hmm might be struggling to get it blanked out …apart from that it is a lot of vinyl .so the question i really want to ask is will paint adhere to it enough so that when a pull the application tape off i wont be looking at yellow paint on it !!!

    Regards Brian

as long as you use the correct type of paint and leave it to dry, dont see a problem,

yes its a lot of vinyl, but which process is cheaper for you? covering the sign in vinyl, OR priming, painting AND vinyling afterwards?

Buy some low tack application tape from Cox Plastics, im not a fan of it for stock, but its useful for applying vinyl lettering on newly painted surfaces 🙂

If you are going to paint it you will have to spray it with GripFlex, expensive, sticky, and stinky.
And there is still a chance that you’ll see the black lettering.
I would try flooding it with vinyl, even if I had to do it in two layers to totally block out the black. If this sign is to be lighted, the black lettering will show through no matter what.
I’d try to talk them into a totally new sign.

    Brian,

Not sure exactly what you are doing but if you want to paint self adhesive vinyl, have you considered using yellow vinyl screen ink?

    🙂

    Hi Brian
I might be misunderstanding this but we did a refurb on a plastic sign before Christmas. We sanded the sign lightly to create a tooth, then primed with a white primer. We then used Dulux exterior paint with a roller. It looked great and totally covered the sign with nothing showing through. We then applied black 651 vinyl and it looks great! The app tape didn’t pull any paint off either.

    Hope this helps

    Peter
