  • paint peeled off with app tape on van should i pay repair

Posted by Alex Strath on 8 October 2014 at 14:40

I was applying vinyl to a 2001 citreon berlingo and the the top layer of paint peeled off in two sections of the van ( bonnet and rear ) both about 8 inches of top layer of paint peeled off with the application tape. After looking closely at the van there is blistering where the laquer or top layer of paint is starting to come off already on the van. Not sure how to go about dealing with the customer on this one. Should I be apologetic and offer to pay for damage or is it a bad paintjob and not really my fault? Really unsure 😕

    Bad paintjob. Not your fault.

Had that happen too many times.

Bike fairing – mis-matched primer & topcoat. Blistered & peeled off like clingfilm.

New respray – top coat laquer peeled off when removing vinyl.

Bad respray (flash coat to sell a van) – several square feet of paint came off.

and several other bad resprays and one van partly painted in EMULSION that have come away when peeling app tape.

on all occasions you stop – call the customer – show them the issue / let them acknowledge it…accept ZERO BLAME and move on.

I’ve only had one person get a bit stroppy…handed him the vinyl and told him to peel it off if he could…some more missing paint, a bit of swearing and he agreed that it wasn’t my fault.

if I’m feeling generous I’ll sometimes ‘fix’ small issues it for some customers and tell them afterwards that their paintwork is crap. A vast collection of halfords spray tins is handy.

Stick a line in your terms and conditions along the lines of:

    quote :

[Company Name} employ a process to apply your graphics, consequently [Company Name} accept no liability for the normal application of that ‘process’ damaging inferior, badly prepared paintwork or substrates that are unfit for purpose.
If you have any doubts about the process it is the client’s responsibility to investigate what it involves.’

Saved my bacon on more than one occasion, not always easy to spot problem paintwork.

Cheers Jon. Thanks Harry will add that to our t & c’s from now on. I have done that David left her a message – she’s on holiday til Monday. I shouldn’t have said "easy job today" this morning – jinxed it!! What about payment? I would ideally like to be paid something it is 90% fully signed but stopped when it began peeling.

If you are using a paper application tape – soak it and it’ll virtually fall off without removing any more paint.

What’s the name of the application tape David?
I used to do the same with application tape, soak it, leave it for a little while and it would fall away…. easy peasy. Not anymore! Stuff I get now seems to be ‘waterproof’

Standard R-tape 4075 PTA if I remember off-hand. It’s just catching it between disintegration and the paper and glue separating and wet enough to lift off with no effort. Good soak with soapy water / application fluid. 2 minutes usually sees it…good emergency fix.

bad prep work below or badly ageing paint,

i stripped the wrap i put on my bmw and a lot of laquer came off with it.

good job i can spraypaint a bit!

i would be very weary of working on an old van to be honest, 13 year old paint on a van will have had a sore life!
