paint or floodcoat metal sign
Posted by James Martin on 30 July 2007 at 14:17Customer has came to me with a metal blank with writing painted on it and I’ve told him it would be no bother to redo a new sign on top.
Ive went to flood coat and realized that the old stuff will show through and I don’t want to do loads of coats of vinyl.
Can anyone recommend a paint that will kill the image underneath and leave the surface good for a new look.
Its a regular customer so I don’t want to give him the ‘Best going for a whole new one routine’.

How about sticking some di-bond on the face of the old panel 😕

James, I would scuff sand it, then take it to an auto body painter and have them prime and paint it with automotive paint.
…if you factor it into the price, maybe the client will opt for a new panel!

I would imagine you would be cheaper starting from scratch or as Dave (or Rob) sais put dibond over the face. If they are a regular customer they may appreciate you showing them what will happen if you just stick the vinyl over the face so they can see why they will be paying extra… they may even be happy with the result?!

I should have mentioned it was one of those wobbly jobs with the metal screwd into a slot in a plastic base.
I think it would have to be paint or just buy a new metal blank i’m now thinking.
Its quite thin stuff, any ideas how much and where I could get one 80cm by 40 roughly.

A freestanding sign like this http://www.signwavesgroup.com/en.php?/products/pavement_signs/eco-flex/ ???
If so the plastic base can be widened with a stanley knife to take dibond, I think I’ve even cut enough away to fit in 5mm foam pvc in the past. I’m not sure if sign waves do spares, could also be a breezer from Robet Horne and they do sell the panels separate. (i think the breezers say breezer on the base?)

Tks everyone
I will have a word with both of those companies Gavin, slotting the dia bond in there also sounds like a great option as well.
good ideas
cheers all.

If you really want to use the existing panel, have you considered spending 5 minutes with an orbital sander on the lettering, it may be enough to allow coating the panel with vinyl and not see through the previous lettering 🙂

sorry, but am I missing the point here.
Why can you not just float on another layer of vinyl to obscure the showthrough? Its only 2 mins work and £1 in vinyl -
If it shows through with one layer of vinyl it’s likely that it will still show with two.

I have just done one of these, can of car paint sprayed over existing text (after keying with sandpaper) then applied vinyl, Preferably not Oracle 751c, perfect job. Done a few like this now as I found the same problem as you on my first one.
Cheers
Dave
