    Hi all,

I have to fit a replacement face for a store front.
2′ x 13′ 040 gauge aluminum. The old sign is in 2 sections with an overlap and riveted. I was planning on doing the same. How much should I overlap the sections. I was thinking a couple of inched should do the trick but this is the first time I am doing this so figured I would consult the experts.

Robert, see you are still up, do you ever sleep?

It is only 9:12 pm here so Steve and I still have a few hours to go!

Bryan a couple of inches is more than enough, as for joining you could use a VHB tape so there are no rivet haeds showing, there are some very good VHB tapes about for alluminium. Or you could use countersunk rivets so the heads were flat with the panel

    Thanks Martin.

The tape option sounds like a good solution.

I think a half inch is enough, but at 13′ you’ll have the extra so….
My first one, I butted up against with no overlap. It was on treated 2 x 4 wood frame and rivited to the wood. It probably wasnt’ the best way, but it’s 3 years old and looks fine. It was a wall mount on brick.

I like the tape idea… I’ll use that in the future. I just built a post and panel with the help of a veteran signmaker and we taped 1/8″ aluminum sheet faces to welded 3 1/2 square tube. Routed the edges and painted with urethane. It’s awesome and worked well.

hi bryan 2.45am here 😮 :lol1: i normally knick off about 3am 😕 thats if i dont pass out first, nose on the keyboard and drool all over my desk… :worry:

as for joining, there are many methods. quick and easy one already mentioned is butting the joins up, no overlap. but a strip of alluminium down the back about 2inch wide. one inch on each section using vhb tape, or like you said, rivets.
