oralite reflective 5400 series
Posted by Brian Little on 31 March 2010 at 14:32hi folks my customer wants his van done in this material. ive suggested to him that if he wants to remove lettering for resale then he would be better to have an outline/shade (without welding ) so that the letter sits on the vinyl not the van surface. He says that his friend had this material and that it came off no probs…..hmmmm am i right? any help appreciated
regards brian

You’ve advised him that reflective may be more tricky to come off, it’s now his call – 5400 is only a 4 year film though so I wouldn’t use it on a vehicle (or anything else for that matter!)

4-5yr i thought? either way i’d expect it to last a lot longer than the 4yrs quoted, i used 5400 when it first came out, on a few recovery trucks, these trucks to 100k miles a year in all conditions and they’re steam washed with a strong detergent most weeks, no probs so far and that more miles than most vans will do in 3-4yrs!

Brian, more fool him if he thinks it will come off easy after being on there a while, I had trouble getting a bit off a van because it was slightly out of place and that was before I had put a squeegee on it :lol1: :lol1:
If you have told him of the problems then just go ahead and do it for him but make sure you include something on the invoice to say that the customer has been informed of possible problems removing.

Brian, I always tell the customer that it can be a problem to remove because the adhesive on the back is more aggressive than on other types of vinyl, like you I offer to letter the van with standard vinyl and put the reflective over the top to ensure the reflective comes off OK at a latter date. Some customers are quite happy to pay the extra and some are not, think some people believe you are just trying to bump the price up.
I have even stuck a bit on a bit of board and watched as the guy tried to remove it only to be told that he wasn’t an expert at vinyl removal but if he was it would have come off OK.
I also have a couple of customers who don’t care about the paintwork as they basically drive the vans into the ground and the only place they go when they have finished with them is the scrappy so no point protecting the bodywork.
