How you like your benches peoples?

Mine are currently set about 3 inches below my waistband (chest height for you rob ) …. I lowered them a few months back so I could reach the center of the bench easier. But, I’m finding that it’s a bit low for my back, it’s an awkward stoop…

The guy that works for me says that he’s ok with it, I’m beginning to think, after working at them for a few hours this evening (errr yesterday evening) that it should be a bit higher.

It’s easy enough to raise them, I just have to add a few 4×2 legs (or 6×2 whatever I can find lying around) to bring up the working height. But again, I will have reach problems, and I will have to raise the laminator height too. One of the reasons they are set so low is that the laminator feeds directly on to the bench. No trouble to raise that though, just a platform for it.

what do you all find best?

i’m 6’1" and my bench must be almost 4ft (1.2m), so much easier than bending down all the time. occasionally its tricky when taping big decals but otherwise it’s more comfortable for weeding which is what really bends the back. upon my person its just above hips at around belly button height!

mines 34 ins and 4ft wide i can just touch the other side. being 6ft tall its just a little low but need to look on top of work for alignment, if doing prolonged small stuff weeding i will sit down.

88cm high here. I think a good height is to place your palms on your table and your elbows should be slightly bent.

mines 800mm off the ground as I copied Phil’s tutorial and in haste didn’t give it any thought, it’s too low for me and would like it 900mm as per my old tables.

Still trying to find a cheap way to extend them 😕

Warren, do what I did, just build a mini bench 1000×1000 and bolt them on the ends, now my bench is just over 3200mm long and about 2500mm wide.

Get sawn 4×2 it’s cheaper and sand it down…..

Easy Warren. Just sue the author of the tutorial due to back related pain caused by low work benches and buy some custom made benches at the right height with the money :lol1: :lol1:

What, no EU standard – one of you should demand the EU standardize on a height and then capitalize on it – you do still believe in capitalism?

I think the real error comes down to those that haven’t compensated for their own height. :lol1:
i was buying table legs only last week and they vary also. some fixed at 700mm some taller. some taller again with adjustable heights.

mine? well… Dave, I’m sure you would probably would use my weeding table for breakfast in bed. :lol1: 😉

So to answer Mo’s original question then the answer is; Make an application to the E.U. for them to standardise Table top height and during the years and millions of pounds it costs for then to come to some sort of standard you can do one of two things.

    1. Read the tutorial about making your own work bench, wait for claims direct to bring out an add, make a claim and wait for them to try and get you some money so you can buy expensive custom built benches ( By then the E.U. should have agreed some sort of standard)

    2. Think of a number between 1 & 10, double it, multiply by the air speed velocity of a swallow and divide by the square root of a chocolate tea pot.

P.S. Doesn’t matter if it is an African or European swallow.
