    HELP PLEASE
I’ve been trying to rip a couple of PDF’s in postershop but they’ve taken hours (literally) left the computer to rip last night a 7.5mb file. Can in this morning to find it’d only done 90% and taken 14 HOURS!!! Can’t understand why! I’m using Onyx 6.5 and the files been created from Indesign CS2 as a PDF version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x). Hasn’t happened with other files created the same.

CAn anyone shed some light on this, I’m urgently needing to print today!!!

    is indesign your normal route?

Depending on the make up of the file really… the last resort (or only resort) is to take the PDF into Photoshop, render it to say 120dpi and save as TIF and read into the RIP, keep an eye on scale and sizes tho. Layers and Transparency can also effect speed.

I have an older version of Shiraz RIP, if you send an image that is rotated to the RIP it will take ages to RIP, however I have to test the latest version.

I tried ripping the file as a photoshop eps first, and took too long so created a PDF in INdesign.

Sometimes use Indesign, usually create a PDF from Illustrator or use an eps from Photoshop, depends whats involved in the files components and how many. i’ll try using photoshop route, seems like only option!

Does postershop prefer tiff files then?

I’ll let you know the outcome, cheers Dave.

We use Shiraz Richard, it can import TIF and a lot of RIPs do.

I prefer PDF myself, although EPS and PS can be very large and timeconsuming. TIF converting sometimes help in urgency, keep an eye on colours too.

right. Got the rip problem solved (no thanks to Artsystems with whom I asked if they could get back to me URGENTLY!).
I resaved the image as an Adobe Illustrator PDF and instead of the rip taking nigh on 14hours it took only 20 minutes. Come on!! :lol1:

Just a note to add; I find that Onyx has real problems with any PDF files which contain transparency. If memory serves, version 1.4 can handle transparency and in this age of drop shadows and blends there’s a good chance your file contained these effects. Saving down to PDF 1.3 and rasterizing transparencies will really help. Additionally, rasterizing at the time of making the PDF actually does a better job than Onyx does (in addition for making a much faster RIP time).

I have a dual Xeon running Production House 7 and I find 1.4 spec to be a real drag from a productivity stand point.

Wasatch is also slow when dealing with transparency.
