How bizarre! I was doing a search for something and my business name popped up in the results. Intrigued I clicked the search link, and all my business details are listed on a site called http://www.uk-signs.net

The thing is, no one has ever approached me, or mentioned putting it on there 😕 Is your business on there? If so, how? Strange! 😮

    Cheers, Dewi

It has me kind of puzzled as to where Tim has got our information from, its highly unlikely he’s got it from UKSB, so I cross referenced the companies listed with the yellow pages. Not everyone who is the yellow pages is on that website, so I cross referenced with the Thompson Local. It matched.

If my theories correct, he’s bought a mailing list from the Thompson Local, then compiled a website with all our companies on. It is bizarre though as it doesn’t seem to serve a purpose. There aren’t any major advertisers on there, the information is available already from the Thompsons and although I’ve tried several searches, it doesn’t seem to be too prominent in the search engines. 🙄

    Very wierd :dance4:

there are many ways to build a directory.
Thomsons probably copied yellow pages to start with,
First they publish the directory, then work through their list to convince you to buy a better listing than just a line. Scoot did it about 8 years ago, every man and his dog were in the data base. But if you want to get to the top of the list you gotta pay. just like any search engine.
expect a phone call or email soon from them

scoot came into us years ago.. they told us all the stats, costs and extras to get an advert on the right as a flash image blah blah blah
they went onto to say that prior customers with exact same advert but motionless were getting 7-10 calls a week!
they convinced us, (easy to do when the net was so new at the time)
we took the best ad space. flash image linking to contact details and all that jazz… on it went, i did a search, up it came. did another, up it came again, thought great stuff as this was just for our county area. 1 year on we never had one phone call never mind a sale.
in comes the guy to renew it…. *$%£(*&^^*I :nag2:

never to be seen again :lol1:

    Sign-spotter :lol1: :lol1:

Peter, I think Thompsons were the distributing agent for Yellow Pages and they had a little bit of a falling out. Thompsons then set up on their own to compete with Yellow Pages. Not overly sure whether its an urban myth, but thats what I was told.

I was thinking the same though, we will all soon be plagued 😕 Ahh well, thanks to Pete (Magpie) we now have Tim’s phone number, just incase 😀 Wonder if he needs a sign?

The purpose it serves dewi is to sell you advertising space.
    As you already sussed.
this is a good subject for a new thread so starting one now

Companies like Thompson Local run 100’s of web directories, then inter-link them to boost there rankings within the search engines.

uk sign net is possibly on of the sister/sub directories aimed at boosting the ranking of the main Thompson Local directory.
