  • Oki C9650 any good for business cards?

Posted by Martin Armitage on 13 September 2008 at 10:18

Hi, I have been asked one too many times for business cards and flyers, and am looking at the C9650, is this a reasonable printer, I really would like to start offering services like this myself, and have seen one too many customers go elsewhere. I really dont want to farm the work out to others. so opinions please.
    Thanks
    Mart.

martin i have the 9600 which the 9650 has just replaced quality will not be a issue. but running costs will.
you can not compete with the higher runs, the machine spec says up to 300gsm so you will be running it out side that at 340 gsm for cards,

toner costs while the machine is under warranty are very high till you dare put the cheaper stuff in.

also add in you need a guillotine which can cost as much as the printer.
having said that in the low run bracket there is money to be made.

ring me if you need more info

Martin you could try something like clickclickprint.com initially to see how you fare, they print on a Docucolour 6060 I have used them a few times for lager runs than I want to do in house and not large enough to go to litho.

Hope this is of some help.

    Thanks Chris & Tim,
Looks like the C9650 isnt the way to go if it cannot print on on the right weight card, I had a sample through from the cx350 card printer that also only printed up to 300 and just didnt feel like the quality was there. I will need to look into this further. I was also looking at the cp2000 but it does seem a bit pricey.

Martin why don’t you just send the work out to a company like rcs, do all the artwork yourself, we used to impose all of our work onto A3 sheets and just pay a cutting charge, saved loads of money doing it this way as well, they print on to 400gsm and laminate with a single colour on the reverse for next to nothing and will turnaround in 5 days, pointless trying to buy a printer to do this.
If you are going to print leaflets just lease a digital press, ideal for anything up to 300gsm and you can personalise every leaflet very easily, an opportunity to increase the value of the job you are working on.
